Tuesday’s Ref Crew Very Raptors Friendly

Sean Corbin NBA Playoffs

The Toronto Raptors are about to make history when they take floor in the franchise’s first ever Eastern Conference finals game Tuesday night. Yes, the Cleveland Cavaliers are heavy favorites in series prices (-1200) and even get the double-digit fave treatment in the series opener, but the Raps might have a bit of an advantage with the officiating crew that is slated to work Game 1.

Sean Corbin, Scott Foster and Jason Phillips are the three-man team that has been named to work Tuesday’s contest and the Raptors have a combined 12-3-1 record against the spread (13-3 straight up) in games those guys had been a part of during the 2015-16 regular season.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, went just 6-7-1 ATS (9-5 SU) in games with either Foster, Corbin or Phillips working.

One official in particular jumps out when taking a look at the Raptors: Sean Corbin. In six games during the regular season, the Raptors went 6-0 SU and ATS when Corbin was part of the officiating crew. So dominant were the Raps that they won by an average of 11.8 points per game.

A real disparity in the box scores of these Corbin games is within the free-throw department. The Raptors went to the stripe a combined 192 times (shooting 80.2 percent) in those six games while their opponents made it the line just 123 times (shooting 65 percent).

Yes, the Raptors did get to the free-throw line an average of 26.7 times per game — which was third-most in the league during the regular season — and there is no real reason to believe that Corbin indeed favors the Raps over any other team. That said, Toronto's dominance in these games should not go unnoticed and is something you can take to the betting window confidence when backing the dog in Game 1 Tuesday.
