Odds To Win NBA Western Conference Play-In Tournament

Western Conference 8-seed Odds August 14 2020 Ja Morant and Damian Lillard

The NBA playoffs are just a few days away in the bubble and while all the postseason spots are locked up in the Eastern Conference, the Portland Trail Blazers and Memphis Grizzlies will lock horns to decide the eighth team in the West.

As expected, the final playoff spot in the Western Conference will come down to a weekend play-in, where the No. 9 seed (Memphis) will have to win two games against the No. 8 seed (Portland) to advance. The first game is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, at 2:30 p.m. ET and the second, if necessary, is on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Before we dive into how we got here, here are some very important resources to check out if you’re not familiar with betting on the NBA:

Blazers In The Driver’s Seat

Before the idea of the NBA bubble and which teams would qualify was finalized, Blazers guard Damian Lillard said: “We just want a chance.” Well, the chances of the Blazers making the playoffs prior to the restart were just under 20 percent but after going 6-2 through eight games, their odds have skyrocketed to 93 percent, according to Fivethirtyeight.

The primary reason has been the red-hot play of Lillard, who is averaging 37.4 points per game in the bubble, including back-to-back games of 50 points or more, the first time a Blazers player has ever achieved that feat.

Now, they’re sitting pretty in the 8 slot in the West standings and only have to win one game to advance to the playoffs. If Lillard keeps having these superhuman efforts, we won’t be talking about how well they do in the playoffs but whether the Blazers can win the NBA championship.

Grizzlies’ Hopes Not Dead Yet

Coming into the bubble, the Memphis Grizzlies seemed like a virtual lock to take the 8 seed. Now, the Grizz have to beat Portland twice just to sneak into the playoffs.

Memphis has been downright awful in the bubble at 2-6 SU and the injury to star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. really put the Grizzlies behind the 8-ball from a talent perspective.

One encouraging note: the Grizzlies faced the Blazers once this season at home on February 22 and beat them soundly. They also played in the first game of the bubble and gave Portland everything it could handle before falling short in overtime.
