Which NBA Coach Will Be Fired First in 2016-17?

The old saying “coaches are hired to be fired” rings true in professional sports more often than the men on the sidelines would like to admit, and one sportsbook is already offering odds on which coach will be the first to lose his job in the 2016-17 NBA season.

At Bovada, Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg is a +200 favorite to get the axe. New Orleans’ Alvin Gentry (+225), Philadelphia’s Brett Brown (+300), Utah’s Quin Snyder (+600), Milwaukee’s Jason Kidd (+700) and Toronto’s Dwane Casey (+2000) are also on the board.

These are puzzling numbers for me. While Hoiberg’s first year behind the bench was underwhelming to say the least, the new-look Bulls are off to a 3-0 start and have looked great in every aspect of the game. Hoiberg was highly sought after based on the fantastic job he did at Iowa State, and he’s only 44. Even if the losses start to mount, Chicago will give him more time to find his footing in the pros.

Gentry might be the best option for sports bettors. After leaving the high-flying Golden State Warriors for the head coaching gig in New Orleans, Gentry guided the Pelicans to a 30-52 record in his first year in the Bayou State. New Orleans has dropped three straight games out of the gate, and it’s quite obvious young superstar Anthony Davis badly needs a better supporting cast around him if the Pellies want to break .500 this year.

I wouldn’t touch Brown, Snyder, Kidd or Casey. All four are good coaches and are firmly backed by their respective front offices, so expecting one of them to get canned this year would be a stretch.

Casey’s Raptors are coming off the best season in franchise history that culminated in an Eastern Conference Finals appearance, and the team has improved every year since he came to Canada in 2011. He’s not going anywhere any time soon.
