Opening Odds Analysis

The Bulldogs opened as 8-point favorites and have since been bet up to Gonzaga -10. There has also been movement on the total, which is down to 161.5 points after opening at 162.5 points. The OVER is 11-2 in Gonzaga’s last 13 games played in December.

Alabama News & Notes

Alabama has bounced back nicely from its surprising upset loss to the Iona Gaels, compiling a 2-0 SU and ATS record over its last two games with an 80-71 win over the Drake Bulldogs and a 96-64 win over the Miami Hurricanes. Everything was clicking on both offense and defense in the blowout win over Miami as Keon Ellis (22 points), Jaden Shackelford (15) and Juwan Gary (13) led the way in scoring.

Shackelford has seen a nice uptick in production this season with 18 points and 6.4 rebounds per game so far in 2021-22 after averaging 14 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season. Alabama’s offense ranks 11th best in the nation this season with 85.7 points per game through the team’s first seven games.

Gonzaga News & Notes

Gonzaga is one of the 10 teams ranked higher than Alabama in offensive production this season sitting in eighth place nation-wide with 86.8 points per game. The Bulldogs also rank seventh in scoring margin with a +24 per game through the team’s first eight games. This margin was much higher before the Bulldogs suffered an 84-81 upset to the Duke Blue Devils as 8.5-point favorites and followed that up with an underwhelming 64-55 win over the Tarleton Texans as 32-point home favorites.

The Bulldogs shot only 21.1% (4-for-19) from three-point range against the Texans and needed to play its starters in the second half of what should have been a blowout victory. This can likely be chalked up to being a letdown game after the disappointing loss to Duke, but Gonzaga will need to get back on track in a hurry to avoid another upset loss against the Crimson Tide.

How Alabama Will Cover

Alabama can cover the spread by keeping things rolling on offense. Gonzaga’s defense has been great this year, but it did allow 84 points against the Duke Blue Devils. The Crimson Tide have enough firepower to turn this one into a shootout, and that would lead to a competitive game and a cover.

How Gonzaga Will Cover

Gonzaga’s offense is too good to have two terrible games in a row. Expect the Bulldogs to get back on track in the offensive zone against Alabama, and for whether they cover the spread or not to simply come down to how many big stops the defense can come up with.
