Round two action at the Phil Knight Invitational features a pair of teams coming off close wins, as the Duke Blue Devils and Texas Longhorns collide in Portland.
Duke was down by as many as eight points before getting back into the thick of things in a 99-81 win over Portland State on Thursday thanks to 22 points from Trevon Duval and 18 from Marvin Bagley III. The Blue Devils have won all six of their games in 2017-18 by at least 17 points, but this one was a little closer than head coach Mike Krzyzewski would’ve liked.
The Longhorns had a poor first half against Butler but used a terrific defensive effort in the final two quarters to win 61-48. That’s become the norm for Texas, as the Longhorns haven’t allowed more than 60 points during their season-opening four-game winning streak. Mohamed Bamba has starred for the team this year by averaging 11.3 points, 10 rebounds and 4.3 blocks while shooting 13-of-22 from the floor.
Duke has had no issue facing Big 12 opponents of late, as the Blue Devils are 13-3 SU in their last 16 vs the Big 12.
