Florida vs Texas Tech Preview & Picks: Gators' Offensive Power Faces Red Raiders' Resilience

The Florida Gators just keep rolling, having won nine straight and covering seven times over that span. Now only Texas Tech stands between Florida and an NCAA tournament West Region title and a trip to the Final Four.

The top-seeded Gators are a 6.5-point favorite over the Red Raiders after easily dispatching 7-point underdog Maryland 87-71 in the Sweet 16. Third-seeded Texas Tech had to work a little harder, needing overtime to oust the tournament’s lone remaining double-digit seed, Arkansas, 85-83. The Red Raiders enter the regional final Saturday in San Francisco having covered just once in their past five games.

Florida vs Texas Tech preview & picks

Florida is a machine right now, swamping opponents behind the nation’s third highest-scoring offense, and winning five of its last seven games by double-digits. The Gators have long been the most consistent ATS play among major-conference programs this season, covering at a 73 percent clip—fourth-best nationally, and tops among teams still in the tournament according to data at TeamRankings.com

Texas Tech is break-even ATS on the season, and has covered only five times in its past 14 games. The Red Raiders can put up points, too—their average of 81.1 ppg ranks a very respectable 27th nationally—and the defense is sold enough. But Tech’s track record against elite teams is a tad worrisome; it’s 1-4 ATS against ranked opponents, and has dropped the past two games it’s played to top-20 foes.

Texas Tech can also be rather inconsistent, suffering mystifying losses this season to the likes of Central Florida and St. Joseph’s. Its tournament path has also been somewhat easy to this point—the Red Raiders’ last two games have been against a mid-major and a No. 10 seed, while Florida’s were against the two-time defending national champions and a Top 25 opponent. As far as the body of work is concerned, it’s no contest.

Florida vs Texas Tech Pick: Florida -6.5 (-110)

Did we mention that Florida scores a lot of points? The Gators average 85.5 per game, so no surprise they’ve gone OVER in 10 consecutive games. Florida has also eclipsed the total in eight off 11 games against ranked opponents this season. Texas Tech under coach Grant McCasland can get up and down as well, going OVER in five straight and seven of its last eight.

Florida vs Texas Tech Pick: OVER 155.5 (-110)

Florida vs Texas Tech Prop Bet: Walter Clayton Jr. 20+ Points (+120)

The Gators point guard is the catalyst behind Florida’s high-scoring offense, hitting for double-figures in a ridiculous 21 consecutive games. Clayton is averaging 21 points per game over the course of the SEC and NCAA tournaments combined, and he’s struck for 20 or more in six of his last eight outings.
