Marquette vs Seton Hall Odds & Picks: Golden Eagles To Cover

Two teams on opposite ends of the Big East standings meet on Tuesday night, when Marquette travels to Newark, N.J., to take on Seton Hall. The 10th-ranked Golden Eagles have won six of their last seven games, and are a 12.5-point road favorite over a Pirates squad that’s dropped eight of its last nine.

But from a sports betting perspective, the picture is a bit murkier. Seton Hall (6-12 outright) may be next-to-last in the Big East standings, but it’s covered in three of its last four and five of its last eight. Marquette (15-3 outright) is tied for second in the league but has failed to cover in nine of its last 11—including this past Saturday when it lost outright to 12-point underdog Xavier at home.

Seton Hall is a shell of the team that toyed with NCAA tournament contention last season before ultimately being left out and winning the NIT. The Pirates lost most of the offensive firepower from that squad, and the transfers they brought in were largely reserves and redshirts at their former schools. The result is a team averaging just 64.5 points per game, which ranks a dreadful 344th out of 355 Division I programs.

Marquette lost All-American guard Tyler Kolek but returned a number of key pieces including leading scorer Kam Jones. But the Golden Eagles tend to get beat on the boards against opponents with strong interior players and can get a little too loose with the basketball. Those shortcomings can let lesser teams hang around, perhaps one reason why Marquette has failed to cover in six straight games against double-digit spreads. Last time they went on the road, they needed OT to beat last-place DePaul.

Tuesday brings another road game against what on paper looks like another overmatched opponent—Seton Hall is 168 at KenPom.com and 195 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, compared to 15 and 18 respectively for Marquette. And none of the Pirates’ recent covers have come against teams in the top half of the Big East standings—St. John’s, Xavier and Villanova all beat the Hall easily by double-digits. That trend should extend to a Marquette cover on Tuesday night.

Seton Hall has gone OVER in four of its last five, but all of those have been against relatively low totals. Marquette owns the third-best scoring defense in the Big East and is tops in the conference against the 3—pair that with an anemic Seton Hall attack that managed just 51 points last time out against St. John’s, and this game begs for the UNDER.

Marquette vs Seton Hall News

The Pirates are a little beat up. Guard Dylan Addae-Wusu, who averages 9.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, has missed two straight games with a foot injury and his status is uncertain for Tuesday night. Senior guard Chaunce Jenkins, the Pirates’ second-leading scorer at 11.4 points per game, left the St. John’s game with a hamstring injury, according to NJ.com. And forward Yacine Toumi, averaging 4.8 points and 3.3 boards, missed the St. John’s game with an undisclosed injury, NJ.com reported.
