Villanova Starts Road To Back-To-Back Championships

The last time a college hoops program won back-to-back national championships was 2006 and 2007 when the Florida Gators, with a roster that featured Al Horford and Joakim Noah, cut down the nets. Villanova looks to become just the third program to accomplish the feat since 1973. The Wildcats’ path starts when they take on surging Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday.

SHARK BITES
  • Mount St. Mary's is 3-0 ATS in its last 3 games.
  • Villanova is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games against teams with winning records.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Villanova's last 5 games.

This Villanova team isn’t the exact same as last season's championship-winning squad. These Wildcats don’t play as well defensively but they are more potent offensively. Many of the key pieces remain the same with Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins and Jalen Brunson pacing the team. Jay Wright has loved going small this season, as he has had no problems playing four, sometimes even five, guards at the same time.

Mount St. Mary’s finds itself in the Round of 64 thanks to diminutive guard Junior Robinson. The smallest player in D1 basketball, standing just 5’5”, scored 23 points and hit nine of his 14 shots to lift the Mountaineers over the New Orleans Privateers in their play-in game. Robinson has averaged 21.3 points while shooting 50.5 percent from the field in the past four, but he has also averaged 3.3 turnovers in that span.
