The AAC has basically been a two-team race so far this season, as the SMU Mustangs and Cincinnati Bearcats have separated themselves from the rest of the conference. Books have given the slightest of edges to SMU, with a one-game lead and a win in their most recent meeting, entering the AAC tournament.
SMU is currently -110 with Cincy close behind at +175.
The Mustangs have gone 17-1 in conference play at the time of this writing and have lost one game since the start of December. SMU’s defense is one of the best in the nation, which shouldn’t be a surprise, as the Mustangs are holding teams to 59.4 ppg and a paltry 38.5 shooting percentage. The program also has an abundance of scoring depth, with four players averaging double-digit points, including leading scorer Semi Ojeleye.
The Bearcats have a similar design, as they have a great defense with the offense being spread around. The biggest knock on Cincinnati is a lack of depth, as the starting five has played 71.8 percent of the team’s minutes and has scored 74.5 percent of its points. One would imagine that starting five would start to slow down, but we haven’t seen it yet.
