Opening Odds Analysis

The Cougars opened as 8.5-point favorites, but that line has dipped to -8 in the majority of spots. The total has also seen some downward movement, from an open of 131 down to 130 or 130.5 depending on the book.

Oregon State News & Notes

It was incredible enough to see the Beavers stun the rest of the Pac-12 by winning the conference title as a fifth seed. Things have reached an entirely new level for Oregon State in Indianapolis, with the upstart Beavers rolling to victories over No. 5 Tennessee, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Loyola Chicago. They’re 8-1 SU in their last nine despite being the underdog in all of them.

The focal point on offense continues to be standout guard Ethan Thompson, who is averaging 20.3 points in the tournament after posting a 15.8 ppg average during the season. Thompson does plenty of damage from the free-throw line, having made 25 of 26 attempts through the first three games of the tournament, including 23 of 24 in the past two victories.

Houston News & Notes

Oregon State will face its toughest test of the tournament against a Cougars team that has boasted a truly suffocating defense in Indianapolis – extended dominance from an elite unit that allowed the second-fewest points in the nation. Teams are averaging just 54 points vs Houston over the first three games; Sweet 16 opponent Syracuse was held to a measly 42 points.

The Houston offense hasn’t exactly been a world-beater itself and bottomed out by shooting just 38.3 percent in the win over the Orange. Better performances will be critical, particularly from the duo of Quentin Grimes and Marcus Sasser, who both shot 5-for-15 against Syracuse while combining to connect on just six of their 21 attempts from three-point range.

Betting Pick: UNDER 130.5 (-110)

The UNDER-heavy trend from Day 1 of the Sweet 16 is no fluke, especially where Houston is concerned. Look for the Cougars to slow the pace to a crawl, lean on their sensational defense and keep this one below the total.
