Surging Ducks Eye an Upset vs the Cavaliers in the Sweet 16

The No. 12 Oregon Ducks look to continue making waves in the South Region vs the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers in the Sweet 16. Oregon upset No. 5 Wisconsin and thrashed UC Irvine to make its appearance in the Sweet 16, while Virginia topped Gardner-Webb and Oklahoma to tip off in the third round. The Cavs are an 8.5-point favorite in this game with the total Sportsbook at 119 points.

Standout Stats

  • There are no hotter teams in college hoops right now than Oregon, which has gone 10-0 SU and ATS in its last 10 games with an average winning margin of 17.9. But Virginia is 11-1 SU and 8-4 ATS in its last 12 contests with an average winning margin of 14.91.
  • The UNDER has been the more profitable play for both squads down the stretch when it comes to totals betting. The total has gone UNDER in seven of Oregon’s last 10 contests and in seven of Virginia’s last 12. Of the Ducks’ last 10 games, only two went UNDER 119 points, while three of the Cavaliers’ last 12 went UNDER 119 points.
  • The offense hasn’t been a real big threat for either squad this season with Virginia chipping in 71.6 points per game and Oregon at 70.6 ppg. However, what these teams lack in offense they make up for in defense. The Cavs allow the fewest ppg in the nation at 55.0 and the Ducks rank 11th with 62.5 ppg surrendered.
  • Both teams get a large portion of their offense from beyond the arc. Virginia produces 35.1 percent of its scoring behind the three-point line and Oregon gets 32.8 percent of its points via the trey. From that area of the floor, the Cavaliers hit 40.2 percent of their attempts, while the Ducks shoot 35.1 percent from downtown. Defensively, both teams are tremendous at limiting their foes from long range with Virginia ranking first in opponent three-point percentage and Oregon ranking sixth.
  • Virginia and Oregon are nearly identical when it comes to cleaning the glass, with the Cavs securing 34.8 rebounds per game and the Ducks grabbing 34.5. Both teams do a good job not turning the ball over, but the Ducks do a better job creating takeaways than the Cavs.

My Best Bet for Oregon vs Virginia

Virginia -8.5

Although the Ducks have been flying recently, this will be by far their tallest task and I don’t really see them keeping it close. Virginia has the edge in every area of the game, but the biggest factor is the three-point line. The Cavs shoot better and defend better from that area and I think that will really determine the outcome of the game.
