Michigan Looks to Remain Undefeated as Penn State Comes to Town

Penn State vs Michigan Betting Odds

The No. 2 Michigan Wolverines continue their conference play being one of just four teams in the nation with a perfect record and they look to keep this going as the Penn State Nittany Lions visit the Crisler Arena. Penn State is on a win-one, lose-one streak over its last six games and looking to win in Michigan for the first time since 2010. The Wolverines are 11.5-point favorites in tonight’s game with the total opening at 127 points.

Shark Bites
  • Michigan is 5-0 SU but 0-5 ATS in its last five games.
  • Michigan surrenders the third-fewest points per game in the nation this season (55.1).
  • The total has gone UNDER in nine of Penn State’s 13 games this season.

Points hard to come by vs stout Wolverines defense

Michigan has just one loss in its last 28 games and that came against Villanova in the 2018 national championship game. The Wolverines have rolled through their first 13 games of the season with only one victory being by fewer than five points and they have already knocked off three teams that were ranked, including going into The Pavilion and earning a 73-46 victory over then-No. 8 Villanova. Offensively, they are led by freshman forward Ignas Brazdeikis, who is averaging 16.5 points per game, shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and 50.7 percent from the floor overall.

Michigan averages 73.2 points per game to rank 165th out of 353 teams, but its defense is what paves the path to victory as it is allowing the third-fewest points per game in the nation at 55.1. Additionally, opponents are shooting just 38.4 percent from the floor vs the Wolverines which is the 16th-lowest percentage in college basketball. They are able to limit their opponents’ scoring by giving up just 6.3 offensive rebounds per game, the fifth-fewest in the NCAA.

Nittany Lions are trying to find consistency

Penn State opened the season with a two-game winning streak but has yet to put two wins together since and brings a 7-6 record into tonight’s game. The Nittany Lions have been on a win-one, lose-one streak over their last six games with the last game being a 74-52 triumph over UMBC. They have decent depth this season, with nine players averaging double-digit minutes per game, but only five of those players are scoring five or more points per game. This is a bit of a concern for Penn State as it is averaging just 70.4 ppg, which is the 128th-fewest in the nation.

The Nittany Lions put an emphasis on three-point shooting as 33.1 percent of their total points come from beyond the arc. However, they are shooting just 33.2 percent from long range, which is the 151st-lowest percentage in college basketball, with only one player shooting above 40 percent on three-point attempts. They are able to keep games close, though, as they hold foes to just 66.2 points per game, which is the 60th-best mark in the nation, and limit opponents to just 6.1 treys per game to rank 34th in that category. Lastly, Penn State limits opponents to just seven offensive rebounds per game, the No. 38 mark in the country.

Should you be on the UNDER?

Tonight’s game features two teams ranked in the top 60 for fewest points allowed per game and Bovada has the total opening at 127 points. Both Michigan and Penn State have gone UNDER in nine of their 13 games, but this is the lowest total that either school has had this season. That being said, of the Nittany Lions’ UNDERs, five have gone UNDER 127 points, while the Wolverines have gone UNDER 127 points in seven of their games. Michigan held North Carolina, which is averaging the third-most ppg at 90.3, to just 67 points when they met in late November and I have a hard time finding a way that Penn State will be able to score. The UNDER will come through.

My take on Penn State vs Michigan

I like Michigan to cover the 11.5-point spread. The Wolverines are a perfect 9-0 at Crisler Arena this season with an average winning margin of 18.22 and only one victory coming by fewer than 10 points. Penn State has a struggling offense averaging the 128th-fewest points per game and, going against a squad that is surrendering the third-fewest ppg, I think it will have a hard time breaking 50 points tonight. Additionally, the Nittany Lions have lost the last seven games vs the Wolverines with an average losing margin of 11.57.
