Can No. 13 Villanova Bounce Back Tonight vs Providence?

The No. 13 Villanova Wildcats head home to the Villanova Pavilion as they play host to the Providence Friars. Villanova is coming off its first loss since mid-December, having its 11-game winning streak snapped on Saturday vs Marquette, while Providence is looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since late January. The Wildcats topped the Friars 65-59 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in early January and they are a 10.5-point favorite in tonight’s game with the total Sportsbook at 135 points.

Wildcats look to get back on track after their loss

Villanova had a two-game losing slide in mid-December and rebounded with an 11-game winning streak that was snapped in its last time out. It visited then-No. 10 Marquette on Saturday and fell in a tight battle, 66-65, for its first loss in Big East play.

Scoring has been fairly strong for Villanova, averaging 75.8 points per game overall and 74.7 ppg at home. It gets a lot of its offense from downtown, averaging 30 three-point attempts per game for the fourth-most in the nation, and it shoots 36.2 percent from long range to rate 84th. When the Wildcats work the ball inside, they shoot quite well, hitting 55.5 percent of their attempts from two-point range to rank 25th.

On the defensive side of the ball, they are giving up 66.5 points per game. They do just OK in opponent shooting percentage, holding foes to 43.7 percent (148th). They only allow 55.8 shot attempts per game, the 103rd-fewest in college basketball. This could be attributed to their good ball possession metrics, as they average just 11.2 turnovers per game (29th).

Friars’ Defense has been playing well

Providence got back in the win column its last time out at St. John’s, earning a 70-56 victory for its first triumph since January 27, snapping a three-game losing slide. The Friars had a strong non-conference schedule, going 10-3. But Big East play hasn’t gone as planned, with a 4-7 record against conference foes, including two three-game losing streaks.

Offensively, the Friars have been just average, chipping in 71.8 points per game to rank 184th. They get the majority of their offense from inside the arc, sinking 36.2 points per game from two-point range to rank 147th, but they only shoot 46.6 percent from there, the 55th-worst percentage in the nation.

For the most part, Providence’s defense has been fairly good, surrendering 68.8 points per game to rank 96th, but that average climbs to 72.8 ppg on the road. It rates 95th by restricting opponents to 42.7 percent shooting. Beyond the arc, the Friars rank 125th by allowing opponents to shoot 33.5 percent. Because of their poor shooting percentage, they allow a lot of opponent rebounds, ranking 209th with foes grabbing 35.6 boards per game.

Is an UNDER in Store for tonight’s game?

Both Villanova and Providence have done well defensively recently and Sportsbook has tonight’s total Sportsbook at 135 points. The Wildcats have gone UNDER in seven of their last 12 games, with four games going UNDER 135 points.

The Friars have been on an UNDER tear, going UNDER in nine of their last 11 games, with six games either going UNDER or pushing 135 points. Villanova and Providence tipped off on January 5 and played to a combined score of 124. I think another UNDER will come through tonight.

My take on Providence vs Villanova

I like Providence to cover the 10.5-point spread. Despite having a losing record of 4-7 in the Big East, the Friars have lost by fewer than 10 points in four of those games. Additionally, during Villanova’s 11-game winning streak, six games were won by 10 or fewer points.

The Wildcats get 42.9 percent of their total points from beyond the arc, which rises to 45.2 percent at home, but they only hit seven triples in the first game with the Friars, who surrender an average of 6.5 treys per game away from home. Additionally, the Friars restrict their foes to a 33.5 shooting percentage from three-point range to rank 125th and Villanova’s three-point percentage is 4.8 points lower at home than on the road.
