Rhode Island squeaked past Oklahoma in the Round of 64 and is rewarded with the daunting task of taking on Duke on Saturday. The Rams will be in an unfamiliar spot, as they will be underdogs against the Blue Devils – just the sixth time this season Dan Hurley’s team will be plus-points. Rhode Island has not been overly successful as a dog with the program going 1-4 SU and ATS when being spotted points this year.
Rhode Island got past Oklahoma thanks to a second-half surge that saw players draining threes on a regular basis – something that has not been the team’s strong suit this season. However, stretching the floor became important with the very apparent lack of size that saw the Rams struggling when they drove to the paint in the first half vs OU. That could be the plan of attack vs Duke as well with the Blue Devils starting a pair of big men who both stand at least six-foot-10.
Unlike their Round of 32 opponent, Duke cruised in its first game of the NCAA Tournament by beating Iona 89-67. Four Duke players notched at least 16 points, paced by freshman star Marvin Bagley III, who racked up 22 points and seven rebounds while shooting 10-for-14. It wasn’t all perfect for the Blue Devils, as they allowed the overmatched Iona team to hang around for much of the first half before coach Mike Krzyzewski adjusted the zone defense and started getting stops.
