Bowling Green Betting Odds Preview

The Bowling Green Falcons soared to an impressive and somewhat unexpected 10-4 record last season that earned them a spot in the MAC Championship Game. In the title game the surprises kept coming as they vanquished the then-undefeated Northern Illinois Huskies in a 47-27 rout as a 3-point underdog.

The Falcons were riding a five-game winning streak before an upset loss to Pittsburgh in the Little Sportsbook Pizza Bowl.

With success, though, comes extra attention. Those new eyes on Bowling Green cost them their head coach, as Dave Clawson rode his success to the head coaching job at Wake Forest. Taking over is Dino Babers, who had led Eastern Illinois to back-to-back Ohio Valley championships.

Babers should find the cupboard still full. Bowling Green had the No. 3 offense in the MAC last season and they could improve on that this season with QB Matt Johnson and RB Travis Greene both returning. Johnson will have to break in a few new receivers but after passing for over 3000 yards and 25 touchdowns with only seven interceptions last season he looks like the top signal caller in the conference. The same could be said for running back Greene, who was second in the MAC last season with 1594 rushing yards.

The Falcons' defense was the best in the MAC last season. They held their opponents to a touchdown or less seven times last season while boasting the No. 1 scoring defense at 15.9 points per game. They also ranked No. 1 in yards allowed at 321.4 yards per game and against the run at 150.6 yards per game. The big question of course is can they do it again? It will be a challenge to be that good again with three starters from the secondary and both starting defensive tackles having departed, but the defense was deep last season so don’t count them out.

Bettors that made road wagers on the Falcons last year cleaned up on their 6-1 ATS mark away from home. Also impressive was their 8-3 ATS record when favored.
