Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney celebrates after his team scored during the NCAA College Football Playoff National Championship Game against LSU in New Orleans on Jan. 13, 2020.

Clemson Heavy Favorite to Continue Dominance of Georgia Tech

After solidifying its No. 1 ranking last week with a dominant win over Miami, Clemson (4-0 SU, 1-3 ATS) has a much easier task this week as four-touchdown chalk at Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets (2-2, 2-2) lost last year’s meeting by 38 points, their fifth straight loss to Clemson.

Sportsbook Odds Analysis

Clemson was a 37-point favorite when these teams met last year at Memorial Stadium, a game the Tigers won 52-14. However, Clemson has never been favored by a larger margin than this at Georgia Tech.

Clemson News & Notes

So much for Clemson’s defense being vulnerable after losing eight starters from last year. The Tigers’ stop unit didn’t allow an offensive touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter in last week’s showdown against Miami, holding Hurricanes star quarterback D’Eriq King to just 121 passing yards. Excluding a 56-yard run by King, Miami had just 33 rushing yards on 24 attempts.

Offensively, Trevor Lawrence threw for three touchdowns and added another on the ground, while two-time ACC player of the year Travis Etienne racked up 222 total yards and reached the end zone twice. Clemson did struggle on special teams, however, having three field-goal attempts blocked – including a 61-yarder at the end of the first half that was returned for a touchdown.

The 42-17 victory was the first point-spread cover of the year for the Tigers, who were 14-point favorites. Coach Dabo Swinney also gave UNDER 60 backers a scare when he used an uptempo offense in the dying minutes, then ultimately knelt with Clemson at the Miami one-yard line in the final seconds.

Georgia Tech News & Notes

The Yellow Jackets’ days of being a run-heavy dual-option team are quickly becoming a distant memory. Georgia Tech enters this week with the 38th-best passing attack in the nation, averaging 239.3 yards through the air, and is 20th in total offense at 453 yards per contest.

Freshman quarterback Jeff Sims threw for 313 yards and a career-high two touchdowns in last Friday’s come-from-behind 46-27 win over Louisville. Georgia Tech outscored the Cardinals 39-6 in the final 31 minutes of that contest to erase a 21-7 deficit.

The 46 points shattered Georgia Tech’s previous single-game record of 28 points under second-year head coach Geoff Collins, and the Jackets have gained 400 or more yards in four consecutive games for the first time since 2014.

The win over Louisville was a rare home cover for the Jackets, who are just 2-7 ATS in their last nine at Bobby Dodd Stadium. To improve to 3-7 ATS in their last 10 at home, they’ll need to continue emphasizing ball security. After turning the ball over five times in each of its two previous outings, Georgia Tech didn’t commit a single turnover against the Cardinals.

Betting Pick: OVER 60

Georgia Tech’s offense is brimming with confidence right now and they could enjoy some early success against a Clemson defense that might let down a bit after last week’s big win over Miami. A couple of Georgia Tech touchdowns is probably all we need for the Jackets to go OVER the total for the fourth straight game.
