Clemson News & Notes

D.J. Uiagalelei started against the Boston College Eagles in relief of an injured Trevor Lawrence last year and went 30-for-41 with 342 passing yards and two interceptions. But last week in a rematch against the Eagles, Uiagalelei went just 13-for-28 with 207 yards in Clemson’s 19-13 win as a 14.5-point favorite. The sophomore quarterback is completing only 54.3 percent of his passes this season and has a total of three touchdown passes and three interceptions.

The Tigers’ anemic offense is letting a great Clemson defense go to waste. Clemson has the second-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing only 12.2 points per game. Meanwhile, the offense has averaged a dismal 14.3 points per game in its four games against FBS opponents.

Syracuse News & Notes

Garrett Shrader had a fantastic game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, passing for 160 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 178 yards and one score. Sean Tucker also had a big day with 153 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. But in the end, the Orange fell short of the upset in a 40-37 loss to the Demon Deacons as 6-point home underdogs.

Syracuse did improve to 4-0 ATS over its last four games in the loss. After scoring only seven points in their 17-7 loss to Rutgers, the Orange benched Tommy DeVito in favor of Shrader and have averaged 38.3 points per game since. Needless to say, Shrader will face his toughest test of the season thus far against this stingy Clemson defense.

Why Clemson Will Cover

Syracuse’s defense has allowed 33 points to Florida State and 40 points to Wake Forest so far this month. If the Clemson offense can finally get something going against this struggling Orange defense, the defense should be able to handle the rest en route to an easy win.

Why Syracuse Will Cover

Ever since Garrett Shrader took over the starting quarterback role, this Syracuse rushing attack has looked unstoppable, averaging 276.8 rushing yards per game. Clemson’s defense will surely slow the Orange down a bit, but with the Tigers struggling on offense and Syracuse’s ability to chew up clock, a close game shouldn’t surprise anyone.
