Clemson keeps winning despite tight quarterback battle

Clemson has won its first three games of the season as expected but had a scare on the road vs Texas A&M. The Tigers hung on for a 28-26 win in that contest, by far their closest game this year. Clemson’s other two victories were beatdowns of Furman (48-7) and Georgia Southern (38-7). Although the Tigers have jumped out to a 3-0 SU record, they are 0-3 ATS, but they did nearly cover in the two contests in which they were favored by double digits. Clemson was a 49-point favorite vs Furman and a 31.5-point favorite over Georgia Southern, so it’s not like the Tigers have really been underperforming.

The Tigers are locked in a quarterback duel as Trevor Lawrence and Kelly Bryant continue to compete for the starting spot. Bryant, a senior from South Carolina, led Clemson to an ACC championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff last year. Lawrence, a freshman from Georgia, is a five-star recruit who seems to impress and grow every time he steps on the field. The numbers have been really close between the two, as the freshman is 26-for-42 for 424 yards, five touchdowns and one interception, while the senior is 30-for-44 for 405 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Bryant has been the man under center to start each of the first three games, but Lawrence has entered not long after. Lawrence has been the signal-caller for 18 drives – eight went for touchdowns, two resulted in field goals and two ended with turnovers. Bryant has led 13 drives – six went for touchdowns, one led to a field goal and two finished with turnovers. The senior was hurt in the Week 3 game vs Georgia Southern and didn’t play in the second half so it may be time for the freshman to take the reins against Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech’s strong running game faces Clemson’s elite D-line

Georgia Tech is 1-2 heading into its Week 4 contest but its two losses were tight road defeats to South Florida (49-38) and Pitt (24-19). The Yellow Jackets are 0-3 ATS on the season as they were 42-point favorites vs Alcorn State, in a game they won 41-0, and they were favored in both of their road losses. Despite having a losing record, Georgia Tech has averaged 32.7 points per game, which ranks 64th in the nation. The big issue is that the Yellow Jackets surrender an average of 24.3 points per game, which puts them 71st in the NCAA.

Georgia Tech has a run-first mentality that has catapulted it into first place in the nation for rushing yards per game as well as rushing attempts. The Yellow Jackets average 392.7 rushing yards per game, 34.7 more than second-place Navy. The workload is spread among three players: dual-threat QB TaQuon Marshall and running backs Jordan Mason and Tobias Oliver. The latter is the backup to Mason but still does his damage. Marshall as a pass thrower isn’t overly impressive, completing 47.1 percent of his passes for 353 total yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. However, on the ground, he has rushed 50 times for 293 yards and four touchdowns.

Mason, on the other hand, has averaged 8.1 yards per carry for a total of 274 yards on 34 carries and one touchdown. Oliver has gained 169 yards on 30 attempts and has tallied three TDs. Pretty impressive, right? Well, they all go toe to toe with one of the best defensive lines in college football. Clemson allows an average of just 90.3 rushing yards per game, which is 16th in the NCAA. The Tigers have forced five fumbles, good for a tie for fifth-most in the country, they have 12 sacks, good for a tie for third-most in the nation, and they have racked up 29 tackles for a loss through the first three weeks.

UNDER is trending when Clemson visits Georgia Tech

Clemson and Georgia Tech have gone UNDER in five of their last six meetings at Georgia Tech dating back to 2005, and Sportsbook has this week's total Sportsbook at 52 points. Meanwhile, the two schools have gone UNDER in three of their last four games overall since 2014. Additionally, the Tigers have gone UNDER 52 points in 10 of their last 14 games. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets have gone UNDER or pushed 52 points in 13 of their last 17 home games. Lastly, Georgia Tech’s main attack is its run game and against arguably the best defensive line in the nation, yards may be hard to come by and thus, so too will be points.

My take on Clemson at Georgia Tech

If it wasn't clear above, I'm on the UNDER for this game. I think Clemson's defense is going to smother Georgia Tech's offense and climbing over 52 points seems difficult to achieve. In addition to the points above, the Tigers have gone UNDER 52 points in seven of their last eight games against ACC opponents, while the Yellow Jackets have gone UNDER or pushed 52 points in eight of their last 11 games in the ACC. Lastly, Clemson has gone UNDER this week's total in six of its last eight road games in September.
