Clemson Winning Comfortably But Not Covering Point Spreads

Even though they’ve won each of their first three games by at least three touchdowns, the Tigers don’t seem to be firing on all cylinders quite yet. Clemson had just 13 points at halftime last week against Louisiana Tech before scoring touchdowns on five of its final eight possessions to pull away for a 48-20 victory, but failed to cover the spread for a second consecutive game.

Dabo Swinney’s crew tends to be slow starters, at least when it comes to their performance against the spread. Clemson is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 contests in September and hasn’t covered a road game in the opening month since 2019. It’ll be interesting to see if the Tigers turn up the intensity in their toughest matchup of the season to date.

Demon Deacons Seek Better Effort After Close Call Last Week vs Liberty

The Demon Deacons have won 11 straight games at home, but the most recent one was an unexpected sweat. Wake Forest needed to stop a two-point conversion with 1:11 left in regulation to preserve a 37-36 victory as 17-point favorites vs Liberty last week, winning despite averaging less than one yard per carry and getting outgained in yards.

Quarterback Sam Hartman bailed the offense out by throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns in his second game back after recovering from a blood clot, becoming the school’s all-time passing leader with nearly 10,000 yards. Wake’s defense also came up with some huge plays, intercepting three passes and forcing a key fumble.

Tigers: Keys To Win

Clemson hasn’t been tested much through the first three weeks of the season, but a showdown with the defending Atlantic Division champions should get the Tigers’ full attention. The defensive line can make things miserable for Hartman and stuff Wake’s run game, but Clemson also needs a more consistent effort from DJ Uiagalelei and the offense.

Demon Deacons: Keys To Win

Wake Forest’s struggles last week against Liberty may have been because the Deacons were looking ahead to this huge divisional matchup with the Tigers. In order to end their home losing streak vs Clemson, the Deacs need a huge game from Hartman, especially if their rushing attack struggles again.
