College Football Playoff Look-Ahead Lines

College Football Playoff Lookahead Lines

As we approach the final week of the college football regular season, many fans are buzzing about the potential matchups for the opening round of the College Football Playoff. As it stands right now, No. 1 Ohio State would collide with No. 4 Georgia, while No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Clemson would meet in the other semifinal. However, Utah, Alabama and Oklahoma are also in the hunt and could provide some intriguing games.

Online sportsbook Bovada has released early lines for all of these potential matchups and looking at the rankings right now, the Ohio State Buckeyes are an 8-point favorite over the Georgia Bulldogs and the Clemson Tigers are favored by just 1 point over the LSU Tigers.

No. 1 Ohio State (-8) vs No. 4 Georgia (+8)

It was a little bit of a surprise to see Ohio State jump over LSU in the CFP rankings to the No. 1 spot after LSU has received much of the spotlight this season with the terrific play by Joe Burrow and the big win at Tuscaloosa. That said, the Buckeyes definitely have merit as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation as they have dismantled their competition, leading the country in points scored and fewest points against this season. Additionally, OSU QB Justin Fields and DE Chase Young are both in the running for the Heisman Trophy, though Burrow is the runaway favorite.

Georgia had that hiccup in Week 7, losing at home against unranked South Carolina 20-17 in double overtime. It’s an ugly loss, yes, but that is the only time this season that the Bulldogs have surrendered 20 points. They have allowed 10.7 points per game this year, just 0.2 more than Ohio State. Probably the biggest knock on Georgia is its offense. The Bulldogs average 31.2 points per game, right around the middle of the pack in college football, but they haven’t topped 30 points since Week 6. I would anticipate a low-scoring game if this is one of the CFP semifinals.

Georgia Bulldogs +8-115

No. 2 LSU (+1) vs No. 3 Clemson (-1)

The LSU Tigers boast one of the most dynamic offenses in college football, racking up an average of 48.5 points per game, which is second only to Utah. Most of their attack comes through the air as, once again, they sit second in the nation with 4,255 passing yards, led by Heisman Trophy favorite Joe Burrow. The senior QB has topped 4,000 passing yards and has tossed 41 touchdowns to just six interceptions with a 78.9 percent completion rate. The Tigers have put together a great campaign with four wins over top-10 teams in then-No. 9 Texas, then-No. 7 Florida, then-No. 9 Auburn and then-No. 3 Alabama. It can add a fifth by beating No. 4 Georgia in the SEC championship game.

The reigning national champion Clemson Tigers haven’t lost a game since the CFP semifinal in 2017 and have simply run through the 2019 season. Clemson had a scare at North Carolina in Week 5 but overall has stomped its opponents, going 11-0 with an average winning margin of 31.4. That said, the Tigers’ strength of schedule ranks 80th out of 130 teams so their wins feel a little hollow and it’s tough to judge just how good this team is. However, a couple of key cogs from last year are still on the team, notably QB Trevor Lawrence and RB Travis Etienne. Defensively, Clemson is tied with Georgia in allowing the second-fewest points per game this season, but can it slow down LSU? I can guarantee that the Tigers will win, but will it be LSU or Clemson? I lean toward LSU.
