  • Conference championships are no longer in grasp for Florida or Florida State, but there’s still plenty on the line for both teams as they conclude the regular season Saturday in Tallahassee. The 13th-ranked Gators (8-3 overall, 5-3 SEC) likely need a convincing victory to solidify their place in one of the big bowl games around New Year’s Day (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, Peach or Fiesta), while Florida State (5-6 overall, 3-5 ACC) needs a win in order to be bowl-eligible for the 37th consecutive year.

The Seminoles have dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning the last five matchups by an average of 18.8 points. However, both of these programs are under first-year coaches (Dan Mullen in Florida and Willie Taggart at FSU), so that recent history may not mean that much. Oddsmakers don’t seem to be putting much stock in it, installing the Gators as 4-point road favorites.

    SHARK BITES
    • Florida State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games against Florida (avg. winning margin: 18.8).
    • The total has gone UNDER in 4 of the last 5 meetings (avg. combined score: 44.0).
    • The total has gone OVER in 6 of Florida State’s last 8 games (avg. combined score: 57.5).

FLORIDA OFFENSE ENJOYING BEST STRETCH OF SEASON

To suggest it’s been an up-and-down year for the Gators offense would be a huge understatement. Florida has had four games in which it has scored 17 points or less (including consecutive 17-point efforts against Georgia and Missouri in Weeks 8 and 9), but the Gators have also had four games in which they put up 47-plus.

Fortunately for Florida, the offense comes into this one riding high. The Gators have scored 98 points over their last two games, marking their highest-scoring two-game stretch of the campaign. In last week’s 63-10 laugher over overmatched Idaho, the Gators led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, allowing starting QB Felipe Franks to take an early seat and for coach Dan Mullen to take a look at some of his freshman talent.

Last week’s win over the Vandals may have also provided a much-needed shot of confidence for the Gators defense. Florida held Idaho to just 227 yards of offense, finally locking down after surrendering 105 points to SEC foes over the previous three weeks.

SEMINOLES COME IN WITH MOMENTUM FROM COMEBACK WIN

For most of last week’s game against Boston College, it appeared that the Seminoles’ regular-season finale might end up being meaningless. Needing a victory to keep its bowl-eligibility hopes alive, Florida State trailed BC 21-13 in the fourth quarter. And with three minutes left in regulation, Boston College had the ball in FSU territory up 21-16.

But after the Seminoles forced a BC punt, Florida State struck quickly for a three-play, 83-yard drive and the go-ahead touchdown. Quarterback Deondre Francois hit Tamorrion Terry on a 74-yard pass for the winning score, the latest big play provided by the freshman receiver. Of Terry’s eight touchdown catches this season, two of them have been 70-plus yards and four have been 35 yards or longer.

“Hopefully it’s the defining moment that we all knew could happen,” FSU coach Willie Taggart told reporters afterward. “It’s good that our guys kept believing and found a way. We needed it in the worst way and we’ve got one more to go against our archrival.”

    WHY I’M EXPECTING A LOW-SCORING AFFAIR

Nothing’s going to come easy in this matchup of bitter rivals, especially with so much on the line for both sides. Florida State players have already run their mouths (including kicker Ricky Aguayo telling reporters that “We hate those guys”) and you can bet Florida is eager to deliver the knockout blow to the Seminoles’ streak of bowl game appearances.

To me, all of this intensity makes for the perfect ingredients for an UNDER. That’s the way this rivalry has gone in recent years, with four of the last five meetings going UNDER the total. Defense is where the Gators hang their hat (13th against the pass, 29th in total yards allowed), while the Seminoles put a greater emphasis on the running game last week (36 attempts for 156 yards) and will likely do so again in this one. As long as both teams take care of the ball and don’t give their opponent a short field to work with after a turnover, I think the scoring stays in the 40s.
