  • Notre Dame (9-1 SU, 7-3 ATS) is picking up steam as the season moves along, covering five straight and seven of its last eight. The Fighting Irish opened as 17.5-point favorites this week over Georgia Tech (3-7, 4-6), which is just 1-5 SU and ATS in its last six games.

    Sportsbook Odds Analysis

    Notre Dame was a 20.5-point favorite when these teams met last year in Atlanta, but oddsmakers opened the Irish as just 17.5-point chalk for this meeting in South Bend. Even still, early bettors liked the underdog Yellow Jackets, dropping the spread to 15.5 points as of Sunday night.

    Running back Jahmyr Gibbs continues to be the Yellow Jackets’ most dangerous weapon on offense, if not the only one. Last week, Gibbs led Georgia Tech with five catches, carried the ball 19 times for 96 yards and a touchdown, and returned a kickoff 98 yards for another score. GIbbs finished the contest with 223 all-purpose yards, his third straight outing with at least 200 yards.

    Jordan Yates struggled once again in place of injured starting quarterback Jeff Sims, throwing for just 126 yards and tossing a costly interception deep in Boston College territory.

    That was just one of several critical mistakes the Yellow Jackets made against the Eagles en route to blowing a 21-7 lead and falling to 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games.

    The Fighting Irish delivered their fifth straight point spread cover last week, routing Virginia 28-3 to easily cover as 9-point home favorites. Notre Dame’s defense led the way, recording seven sacks and holding the Cavaliers to just 92 yards in the first half despite playing without several starters due to the flu.

    Quarterback Jack Coan also regained some confidence, recording his first multiple-touchdown outing in his last seven games. Tight end Michael Mayer paced Notre Dame with seven catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, while Braden Lenzy and Kevin Austin also caught touchdown passes.

    Still, Notre Dame managed just 174 yards through the air in its first contest without star wide receiver Avery Davis, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury the previous week against Navy.

    How Georgia Tech Will Cover

    For all of the Yellow Jackets’ struggles this season, they’ve only lost one game by more than 11 points. Gibbs and the ground attack can help them stay within three touchdowns of a Notre Dame team that has scored more than 35 points only once in its last six outings.

    How Notre Dame Will Cover

    The Irish have given up a grand total of nine points in their last two games combined, and it shouldn’t be too hard to contain Georgia Tech’s one-dimensional attack. Even with a showdown with Georgia on deck next week, Notre Dame can’t afford to let up with a big lead late, knowing it needs to impress the playoff committee with a comfortable victory.
