Bears Face Stiff Test Against Iowa State Defense

Gerry Bohanon & Baylor welcome Iowa State to town in massive big 12 matchup.

Baylor (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) has lit up the scoreboard so far this season, but things should be a lot tougher for the Bears attack this week against Iowa State (2-1, 1-2). The Cyclones have gone UNDER the total in eight straight overall and in 16 of their last 19 on the road.

Opening Odds Analysis

Iowa State had been bet up to 6.5-point road favorites by Sunday night and could close as favorites of a touchdown or more. Baylor has been a home underdog just five times in the past four seasons.

Iowa State News & Notes

After scoring just 33 points in its first two games combined, Iowa State’s offense finally got rolling last week in a 48-3 romp over UNLV. Quarterback Brock Purdy posted the third-highest quarterback rating of his career, erasing the taste of a three-interception performance the previous week, and Breece Hall ran for 70 yards in the opening quarter alone.

“It was a good confidence booster, for sure,” Purdy told the Associated Press after Iowa State racked up nearly 500 yards of offense.

Hall scored a pair of touchdowns against the Rebels and has now run for at least one score in 15 straight games, the longest streak in the nation. But the more impressive stat involving Iowa State these days might be how dominant the Cyclones defense has been in the second half. Iowa State has given up only 25 points and one offensive touchdown after halftime in its last seven games, all of which went UNDER the total.

Baylor News & Notes

The Bears face their stiffest test of the young season after beating Kansas, Texas Southern and Texas State by an average margin of 35.3 points. Baylor’s running game has done most of the damage offensively so far, collecting 307 rushing yards last week after having three different backs run for at least 100 yards in Week 2.

Despite Baylor’s early-season dominance, coach Dave Aranda does have something to harp on this week in practice: improved discipline and fewer turnovers. Even though they outgained Kansas 576-166 in yards last week, the Bears led just 14-7 at halftime because of penalties and giveaways. Baylor cleaned things up in the second half, not getting whistled for a single penalty as it outscored the Jayhawks 31-0.

Staff Betting Pick: Iowa State -6.5

After beating up on softer opposition in its first three games, Baylor should get a wake-up call from this fierce Cyclones defense.
