Jonny Knows Picks: College Edition Week 1

Thank heavens college football is back. Hopefully I’ll be saying the same thing after this weekend.

Many of you have asked me on Twitter if I’ll have my picks again this season. I will — in several media forms — but in case you prefer good old-fashioned reading, here they are. It’s mostly in point form but you can listen to our podcast or check out our OddsShark Live video from this week to hear more (above).

I am tackling the biggest games here and you can catch my Periscope on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. ET for further breakdowns. Follow me on Twitter @JonnyOddsShark to check it out.

Tulsa at Oklahoma State (-18, 69)

  • Key betting stat: Tulsa is 11-2-1 ATS last 14 on the road. 6-1-1 ATS last 8 games.
  • Total went OVER in 11 of OK State’s last 13 home games
  • No. 7 and No. 17 scoring offenses in the nation last year and they’re going to be good again this year.
  • Pick: OVER 69

Ohio State at Indiana (+20.5, 57)

  • Key stat: Buckeyes are 22-1 as the road team, 14-9 ATS last five years. Cover at 64 percent on road in conference last 10 years.
  • Ohio State is 12-0 SU & 8-2 ATS in Week 1 as far back as our records go
  • Kevin Wilson was Indiana coach, now Ohio State OC. I think there’s going to be some familiarity here.
  • Pick: UNDER

Colorado State vs. Colorado (-4, 66)

  • So far Colorado State is seeing most of the money because of their win last week. Line opened at 8, moved down to 5 and down to 4 today.
  • UNDER is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings in this one.
  • Key betting stat: Rams are 34-20-3 ATS last 5 years (55.5%)
  • Pick:  UNDER

Michigan vs. Florida (+5, 43) – in Arlington

  • Florida second-fewest TDs in the SEC last year. 9 returning starters on offense.
  • 10 players have now been suspended for Florida, bringing this line up.
  • Tip: Don’t get carried away by the news.
  • Key betting stat: Gators are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games
  • Pick: UNDER ….. value in Gators at +5

West VirginIa at Virginia Tech (-4, 51.5) – FedExField

  • Va. Tech has a great secondary that I think will help the Hokies win this one with good D and a simple game plan where they’ll try to let their O-line win it. That’s why this total came way down from 55.5 to where it is now.
  • Key betting stat: These two teams are 44-66 O/U combined last 5 years. 66% UNDER.
  • Pick: UNDER 51.5… I also like Va. Tech here

Texas A&M at UCLA (-3.5, 56.5)

  • Key betting stat: A&M failed to cover in its last 9 games down the stretch last season and went 1-6 ATS on the road in its last 7
  • A&M had poor linebacker play last season and I think that’s where Josh Rosen eats them up
  • Pick: UCLA -3.5

Alabama vs. Florida State (+7, 49.5)

  • Tide are 24-1 in their last 25 games.
  • Key betting stat: Tide are ATS: 25-16-1 (61%) as the road team under Nick Saban.
  • Pick: Tide -7

Tennessee at Ga. Tech (+3, 56)

  • Eight of the top nine tacklers are back for Tennessee. I was liking their offense a lot too but my concern here is Tennessee starting left tackle Drew Richmond was suspended this week.
  • Key betting stat: Both teams are 63-51-1 O/U last 5 years (55.3%)
  • Pick: OVER and, reluctantly, Tennessee
