Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines vs Penn State Nittany Lions

Home teams have dominated recent meetings between Penn State and Michigan, a trend the Nittany Lions hope continues Saturday night when they welcome the Wolverines to Happy Valley. The Wolverines whipped Penn State 42-7 last year, the third straight clash between the Big Ten rivals to be decided by 35 or more points.

Matchup Information
  • Michigan Wolverines vs Penn State Nittany Lions (Matchup Report)
  • Date/Time: October 19, 7:30 p.m. ET
  • TV Coverage: ABC
  • Opening Odds: Penn State -8 | O/U 46.5 (Line History)

Opening Odds Analysis

The 8-point opener marks the most Michigan has been underdogged in nearly two years, dating back to a November 25, 2017 contest against Ohio State. Public perception of the Wolverines may be dropping, considering Jim Harbaugh’s crew has covered just two of its last 10 outings.

Michigan News & Notes

Although the Wolverines are coming off their second-highest offensive output of the season, the Michigan attack is under fire once again.

After racking up 360 yards and four touchdowns in the opening half last week against Illinois, the Wolverines opened the second half with five consecutive scoreless possessions. That opened the door for the Illini to fight their way back into the game, narrowing Michigan’s 28-7 halftime bulge to 28-25 before the Wolverines put things away with a pair of late touchdowns.

Fumbles continue to be a huge factor in Michigan’s offensive woes. The Wolverines fumbled the ball away twice against Illinois, bumping their season total to nine lost fumbles.

“Yeah, it’s a concern,” admitted head coach Jim Harbaugh. “We’re going to continue to look at it.” On the bright side for Michigan, the Wolverines outgained the Illini 295 yards to 54 on the ground.

Penn State News & Notes

Nearly two months into the season, the Nittany Lions finally have a signature win to hang their hat on. Penn State limited Iowa to just 70 yards on 30 rushing attempts last week, handing the Hawkeyes a 17-12 defeat and earning its first victory this season over a ranked opponent.

The Lions threw for just 117 yards themselves and lost the total yardage battle 356-294, but their defense came up big when things mattered most. Turnovers led directly to 10 of Penn State’s 17 points, including an interception in Iowa territory midway through the fourth quarter that set up an insurance touchdown. That TD ended up being the winner as the Nittany Lions successfully ran out the clock after Iowa scored late to pull within five.

Offensively, Penn State had three different scores on a single drive negated by penalties — a rare sight for one of the least penalized teams in the nation.

Betting Pick: Penn State -8

I expect the Nittany Lions to make the most of this opportunity to make a statement in prime time on national television.
