The in-state rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State is one that dates back over a century. Though much of those 100-plus years of battles have tilted toward the Wolverines, recent history favors the Spartans. Michigan State is 7-2 SU (9-0 ATS) in the past nine battles between the two programs.
Michigan took a 32-23 victory over Michigan State last season despite a fourth-quarter surge by the Spartans. That late offensive output was largely thanks to backup quarterback Brian Lewerke, who in just nine minutes of play accounted for 124 offensive yards and two touchdowns.
Lewerke is now the full-time starter for Michigan State and proving that he deserves that distinction. The sophomore has thrown for 963 yards and rushed for a team-high 248 yards through the first four games. Michigan State’s defense has been one of the best in the nation, holding opponents to 18.0 points and 247 yards per game.
Michigan comes into this battle a perfect 4-0 but has still yet to truly wow anyone. The offense has wisely leaned on the running game — Michigan is rushing the ball on nearly 60 percent of its plays — but will need likely starter John O’Korn to provide a boost for a lackluster passing attack. Defensively, Michigan is Michigan. Jim Harbaugh and Don Brown have put together one of the best units in the country that excels at getting after the quarterback.
