  • Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor and the Wisconsin Badgers look to improve to 6-0 when they welcome the Michigan State Spartans to Madison on Saturday for a Big Ten showdown. Taylor scored five touchdowns last week as the Badgers recorded their third shutout in five games, while Michigan State is coming off a 34-10 loss to Ohio State.

    The Badgers are 10-point chalk to earn their 20th victory in their last 22 home games. If the line closes at 10 or higher, it’ll be the largest point spread in 16 all-time meetings between these programs.

    Michigan State News & Notes

    For three of four quarters last Saturday, the Spartans managed to do what no one else has been able to accomplish this season — slow down the Ohio State Buckeyes. Unfortunately for Michigan State, one bad frame was enough to spoil their chances of the upset in Columbus. Ohio State gained 296 of its 529 total yards in the decisive second quarter, scoring 24 points en route to a 34-10 victory.

    The one-sided second quarter showed the one weakness of an otherwise solid MSU defence: a lack of depth. Michigan State got worn down when the Buckeyes started rolling, allowing three different players to break off runs of 35-plus yards. Ohio State finished the game with 323 rushing yards, not exactly what the Spartans wanted to see with the run-heavy Wisconsin offense on deck.

    Depth could be a concern on the offensive side of the ball as well. Michigan State was without five offensive linemen by the end of last week’s loss, while cornerbacks Josh Butler and Shakur Brown also sat out the contest.

    Wisconsin News & Notes

    The best defense in the nation padded its stats last week with its third shutout of the young season, holding Kent State to 124 total yards in a 48-0 rout of the visiting Golden Flashes. Running back Jonathan Taylor also enjoyed the opportunity to polish his resume, scoring a career-high five touchdowns on his way to a 186-yard outing that moved him into third all-time on the Wisconsin rushing yards list. He’s also reached the end zone on each of Wisconsin’s last five game-Sportsbook drives.

    The biggest beneficiary of the comfortable win, however, might have been QB Jack Coan. The junior threw a pair of touchdown passes as part of a 12-for-15 outing, erasing the taste of a zero-touchdown, one-interception, 113-yard performance the previous week against Northwestern.
