Florida State Aims To Continue Big Ten Dominance In Orange Bowl

Florida State looked shaky with freshman Deondre Francois under center, but the Seminoles won their final four games to get them a date with the Michigan Wolverines in the Orange Bowl. FSU has historically made easy work of Big Ten competition, with wins in its past eight against the conference, but this matchup is far more difficult than any of those.

Shark Bites
  • The total has gone OVER in 16 of Michigan's last 20 games.
  • Florida State is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games after a win.
  • Michigan is 3-7 SU in its last 10 bowl games.

Francois has done well for the 'Noles and has looked good when he isn’t constantly getting pressured and hit. The offensive line has struggled in pass blocking all season and that could be an issue against a Don Brown-led defense that loves to bring pressure. The best way to counteract this will be a healthy dose of Dalvin Cook. Cook, who is arguably the best running back in the nation, has been great all season but turned it on to end the season with 720 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in the past five games.

FSU’s defense has been rounding into fine form by holding opponents to 13.5 points per game in the past four, though none of those offenses ranked higher than 70th in scoring offense. DeMarcus Walker and Josh Sweat form the backbone of a defense that led the nation in sacks, with Walker pacing the team with 15.0 sacks.

Losing two of their final three regular season games dampened spirits in Ann Arbor, as Michigan went from the playoffs to the Orange Bowl really quickly. However, the Wolverines are still one of the best defenses in the nation. Brown loves to bring pressure and Michigan recorded 44.0 sacks on the season with Taco Charlton leading the way. Of course, Jabrill Peppers plays all over the field and is arguably the best playmaker in the nation.

The Michigan offense is solid, yet unspectacular. Wilton Speight runs the offense efficiently and accepts his role in a defense-first team. Speight played in ‘The Game’ after dealing with a collarbone injury and performed well, but the Wolverines will want him at 100% because the offense can struggle immensely when the junior is off his game.
