The Ole Miss Rebels (8-3 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) will be looking to halt a two-game slide that has dumped them to No. 20 in the AP Top 25 when they renew their century-old Egg Bowl rivalry with the Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-4, 5-5-1) on Thanksgiving night.

The Rebels limp home for Thursday’s regular-season finale after falling 42-27 in Arkansas last weekend and have now lost three of their past four contests. The Bulldogs are coming off a dominating 53-7 home win over East Tennessee State but have been regularly outclassed during a three-game road losing streak.

Mississippi State vs Ole Miss Opening Odds

Ole Miss has steadily faded to a 2.5-point home favorite since opening as 4.5-point chalk, while the total has climbed to 63.5 since opening at 63. These cross-state rivals have faced off every year since 1944 in what is affectionately known as the Battle for the Golden Egg.

The Rebels have topped Mississippi State in each of the past two seasons, and in six of 10 overall, and now hold a clear 64-45-6 edge in 115 all-time head-to-head clashes. The total has topped 50.0 in five of their past seven dates. However, it is the UNDER that has paid out in 16 of the past 20 matchups. Home teams have also struggled in recent clashes between these squads, winning just two of the past seven.

Bulldogs Get Confidence Boost from Rout of Bucs

A date with the hapless East Tennessee State Buccaneers was just what the doctor ordered for the Bulldogs in the wake of a tough four-game stretch, capped by their one-sided 45-19 loss to top-ranked Georgia. After losing three of four, the team took out its frustrations on the Buccaneers. The Bulldogs scored almost at will while racking up a 35-0 lead by halftime, and maintained a stout defense after recess, allowing just 59 yards in the second half.

Things have not gone well on the road, where the Bulldogs have been outscored by a massive 88-39 margin during a 0-3 run that has featured two losses to nationally ranked opponents. Quarterback Will Rogers particularly struggled during that slide, failing to throw for more than 231 yards while connecting for just two scores against two picks.

However, Rogers enjoyed plenty of opportunity to work out the wrinkles last weekend, connecting with four different targets for five touchdowns in just three quarters of work. That type of distributed scoring could be crucial against a Rebels pass defense that has surrendered 10 touchdown passes over their past three outings.

Ground Game Paying Dividends for Rebels

The Rebels have seen their hopes to play a bowl game on New Year’s Day evaporate during their current two-game slide. Perched at No. 11 in the rankings just two weeks ago, their skid has also robbed them of any chance of competing for this year’s SEC crown.

Ole Miss had no answer for an Arkansas Razorbacks attack that stormed out to a 35-6 lead by halftime and piled up a 42-6 lead before taking the foot off the pedal in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has particularly struggled, connecting on just one scoring pass outside garbage time over the past two games. Accuracy also remains a concern for Dart, who has completed just 57.1 percent of his pass attempts over the past five games.

On a positive note, Quinshon Judkins has continued to perform in the backfield. The freshman rusher ran for a season-high 214 yards and a TD in last weekend’s loss to Arkansas and has now marched for 10 scores over the past six games to boost his total on the season to 16, fifth-most in the nation.

Mississippi State: Keys To Victory

The Bulldogs cannot afford to relax in the wake of last weekend’s rout of East Tennessee State. That means not conceding the early lead the way they did in their losses to Georgia and Alabama, and Rogers spreading around his targets the way he did so effectively against the Buccaneers.

Ole Miss: Keys To Victory

There is plenty to like about the Rebels offense, which racked up 703 yards in last week’s losing effort against Arkansas. In addition to Judkins’ big day, a repeat of rusher Zach Evans’ 207-yard performance would provide a lift. More important is the performance of Jaxson Dart, who needs to do a better job of cashing in on long drives after the team was twice forced to settle for field goals last week. Better discipline is also critical after seeing two scores erased while incurring 112 yards in penalties.
