  • Led by new star quarterback Sam Hartman, Notre Dame is a three-touchdown favorite to continue its recent domination of Navy when the teams open the season Saturday in Ireland. The Fighting Irish are 10-1 SU in their last 11 games against the Midshipmen, although Notre Dame won last year’s meeting by just three points. Navy is just 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS in its last eight Week 1 contests.

    Latest Betting Notes: Midshipmen

    First-year head coach Brian Newberry has plenty of veteran talent to work with as he looks to lead Navy to bowl eligibility for the first time in four years. Most of the Midshipmen’s experience is on offense, including the senior quarterback duo of Tai Lavatai and Xavier Arline as well as star fullback Daba Fofana.

    The triple-option will once again be a staple of the Middies’ offense, although we could see a few new twists under incoming offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut. If history is any indication, however, it might take some time for that potent Navy ground attack to hit its stride. The Midshipmen are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS in its last eight Week 1 contests, getting outscored by more than 19 points per game.

    Latest Betting Notes: Fighting Irish

    Quarterback has been the Irish’s Achilles heel on offense in recent years, but that shouldn’t be the case this season with Hartman under centre. The senior is coming off a 38-touchdown season at Wake Forest, where he needed just three years to set the ACC record for career passing TDs.

    Notre Dame went OVER the total in each of its final seven games last season, and Hartman’s presence will likely lead to the Irish playing some more high-scoring games in 2023. However, with offensive coordinator Gerard Parker also new to the team this year, don’t be surprised if the Irish lean on junior Audric Estime and its other stellar running backs until Hartman and Parker find their groove.

    The Keys to Victory: Midshipmen

    Navy’s unique triple-option attack always gives them a puncher’s chance at the upset, evidenced by their 7-1 ATS record in their last eight as an underdog. That could be especially true in the season opener against a Notre Dame defense that was vulnerable to the run in 2022. When these teams met last year, Navy averaged 5.5 yards per carry while holding the Irish to 1.9 yards per rushing attempt.

    The Keys to Victory: Fighting Irish

    Outside of last year’s 35-32 result — a game the Irish led 35-13 at half — the Irish have had their way with Navy in recent years, outscoring the Midshipmen by nearly 19 points per game in the last 11 meetings. That trend could continue Saturday if Hartman looks comfortable in the new offense and Navy can’t simply focus on stopping the run. As long as the Irish don’t take their foot off the gas in the second half like they did last year, they should be live to cover this three-touchdown spread.
