NCAAF Free Pick From Linebacker: Iowa Hawkeyes vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Nebraska Cornhuskers (NEB +5.5, O/U 44.5)

Scott Frost and Nebraska will host the Iowa Hawkeyes this Friday in Lincoln, as the Cornhuskers look to secure bowl eligibility with their sixth win of the season. The Hawkeyes have other plans, as they’ll attempt to reach nine wins for just the third time this decade. Iowa’s season was punctuated by toppling then-unbeaten Minnesota in Week 12, while Nebraska’s only “impressive” win of the season came in last week’s 54-7 drubbing of Maryland.

Iowa clearly holds the upper hand on paper in this matchup, and Vegas agrees by listing the Hawkeyes as 5.5-point favorites over the Cornhuskers. Our model believes the Hawkeyes can easily take care of Nebraska on the road, projecting a final score of 28.1 - 17.9 in favor of Iowa. We’re suggesting an $83 wager on IOWA -5.5 for an average $100 bettor.

The Linebacker’s NCAAF picks are 303-260 ATS (53.8%) and 301-230 on OVER/UNDERs (56.7%) over the first 13 weeks, profiting +56.96 units, or $5,696 for an average $100 bettor. Head over to thelinebacker.com to sign up for a free trial and get access to EVERY NCAAF Week 14 prediction.

Why Will Iowa Cover the Spread?

  • Nebraska’s offensive identity lies in the rushing attack, where its 205 rushing yards per game ranks third in the Big Ten and 30th in the country. The Cornhuskers’ efficiency isn’t outstanding, however, as their 4.7 yards per carry ranks 47th among FBS schools. Iowa has been extremely stout against the run, surrendering 3.7 yards per carry (28th) and only 114.3 yards per game (22nd). The Hawkeyes’ four rushing TDs allowed on the season are the third-fewest in the nation.
  • The Hawkeyes shouldn’t have too much difficulty in the passing game, which is their offensive strength entering Friday’s matchup. Their 7.4 yards per pass attempt and 242.2 yards passing per game both rank 60th in the country, but they are more of a methodical, short yardage passing team. Their six interceptions thrown ranks 25th in the country, and Nebraska has surrendered a modest 6.9 yards per pass attempt this season (33rd).
  • Iowa’s defense has been nearly impenetrable, allowing a fifth-fewest 12.2 points per game this season. It will likely be too much to overcome for a Nebraska team averaging 28.4 points per game (65th) and 5.8 yards per play (52nd).
