  • Expect a high-scoring affair when Drake Maye and the North Carolina Tar Heels take on Spencer Rattler’s South Carolina Gamecocks in a battle of Heisman Trophy-candidate quarterbacks.

    South Carolina flew OVER the total in each of its final three games last season, while Maye directed UNC to the second-most yards in the nation. The Gamecocks have won four of the last five meetings between the border state rivals, most recently a 38-21 decision in the 2021 Duke Mayo’s Bowl.

    Latest Betting Notes: North Carolina

    Maye finished 2022 with a sparkling statline of 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but most of that damage was done during North Carolina’s 10-1 start to the campaign. Opposing defenses were able to slow down the Tar Heels’ attack down the stretch as UNC averaged just 20.2 points in its final four games, going 0-4 SU and 3-1 ATS during that stretch.

    Maye also won’t have Josh Downs at his disposal after the star receiver was selected by Indianapolis in this summer’s NFL draft, and he’ll have to get used to a new offensive coordinator in Chip Lindsey. That could make it hard for the Heels to reverse a recent trend of slow starts, with UNC going 2-10 SU in its last dozen Week 1 contests and covering just two of its last eight in that spot.

    Latest Betting Notes: South Carolina

    The Gamecocks hope to pick up where they left off last season, at least when it comes to their offense. Rattler threw for more than 800 yards and eight touchdowns in South Carolina’s final two regular season games, leading the Cocks to upsets of Tennessee and Clemson, before South Carolina put up 38 points in its Gator Bowl loss to Notre Dame.

    Antwane Wells Jr. should be Rattler’s favorite target after recording 928 receiving yards last year, the second-most in the SEC. However, Rattler might not get much help from a running game that doesn’t have much returning production. The Gamecocks also have concerns about a run defense that surrendered nearly 200 yards per game in 2022.

    The Keys to Victory: North Carolina

    With one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, the Tar Heels are always a threat to put up a big number on opposing defenses. They might have to, considering UNC allowed the most points and yards of any ACC team in 2022. North Carolina could also find success on the ground behind an offensive line that returns four senior starters, especially against a Gamecocks defense that struggled against the rush in 2022.

    The Keys to Victory: South Carolina

    The late-season upsets of Tennessee and Clemson proved that the Gamecocks can move the ball against anyone. If Rattler and Wells Jr. can quickly recapture the chemistry they showed at the end of last year, the Gamecocks will be live for another upset of a ranked opponent. South Carolina can also swing the game with its opportunistic secondary that ranked near the top of the nation in interceptions last season.
