Ole Miss Rebels featured in our Ole Miss vs South Carolina preview

Ole Miss vs South Carolina Odds & Picks Week 6: Will The Real Rebels Please Stand Up?

Which is the real Ole Miss: the one that hammered lower-level opponents mercilessly, or was completely grounded last weekend in a shocking home loss to Kentucky? We begin to find out Saturday afternoon in South Carolina, where the Rebels opened as 9.5-point favorites over the Gamecocks.

The Rebels had been perfect ATS against their first three FBS opponents but were shut down by 17.5-point underdog Kentucky in a 20-17 loss last weekend in Oxford. South Carolina has covered three straight, winning at Kentucky 31-6 as a 10-point underdog, falling 36-33 at home to 7-point favorite LSU, and hammering 27.5-point underdog Akron 50-7 before taking this past weekend off.

Ole Miss vs South Carolina Picks—Week 6

To paraphrase callers to a certain sports radio program: Ole Miss ain’t played nobody, Pawwwwwl. That certainly appears to be the case now, as the Rebels’ season-opening slate of cream puffs and bottom-feeders did not prepare them for the right cross to the jaw they took from Kentucky. The Wildcats dominated the line of scrimmage, stuffed the Rebels’ run game, and manhandled an injury-plagued Ole Miss offensive line.

South Carolina, meanwhile, has quietly exceeded expectations by dominating that very same Kentucky team on the road and having LSU flat-beaten until a pair of second-half penalties allowed the Tigers to escape. While the Gamecocks’ offense can be inconsistent, the defense is tied for third in the SEC in interceptions and ranks third alone against the pass.

Now, can a Lane Kiffin-coached team figure this out and go on to reach the College Football Playoff? Of course. But on the road, against a rested South Carolina team that’s given better opponents fits, that spread just seems too large.

Ole Miss vs South Carolina Week 6 Pick: South Carolina +9.5 (-110)

South Carolina has split its four games against the total, while the Rebels have gone UNDER in all four games played against FBS opponents—though that group includes Middle Tennessee, Wake Forest and Georgia Southern. Kentucky showed how vulnerable Ole Miss is to disruption up front, and the Gamecocks present two of the SEC’s best pass-rushers in Kyle Kennard and Dylan Stewart.

Ole Miss vs South Carolina News

South Carolina starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers injured his ankle against LSU, and also sat out the Gamecocks’ romp over Akron ahead of the off week. Sellers is expected to return Saturday against Ole Miss, according to ESPN reports. Gamecocks’ running back Rahiem Sanders, who went out early against Akron with an ankle injury, is also expected to be back. Ole Miss has been juggling numerous injuries along its offensive line, with five potential starters limited or out of action.

Ole Miss vs South Carolina Prop Bet: Home TD First Score, +255

South Carolina is very good at getting off to fast starts—the Gamecocks opened 10-0 at Kentucky, 17-0 against LSU, and 22-0 against Akron. With Sellers and Sanders both back in the lineup and the Gamecocks fresh off a bye week, another fast start at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday could well be in the offing.
