Fiesta Bowl Odds Analysis

The Cyclones opened as 4-point favorites and have since been bet up to 4.5-point favorites in Glendale. The total has also shifted up a point from its opener at 56.5 points to 57.5 points as betting action has come in on the OVER. Oregon is 6-3 SU and ATS in its last nine postseason games.

Oregon News & Notes

Sitting at 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS after back-to-back losses to the Oregon State Beavers and California Golden Bears, the Ducks weren’t looking like a good candidate to be playing in an important bowl game back in early December.

But when the Washington Huskies were pulled out of the Pac-12 championship game due to a coronavirus outbreak, Oregon seized its opportunity and won the conference title with a 31-24 win over the USC Trojans as 3-point road underdogs.

Oregon’s defense stepped up to hold USC to just 38 rushing yards and forced Kedon Slovis into throwing three interceptions. The Ducks defense will have its work cut out for it facing one of the nation’s top running backs in Breece Hall on Saturday. The team’s defense was torched for 184.2 rushing yards per game in the five games before its strong performance against USC.

Iowa State News & Notes

Iowa State entered the Big 12 championship game with an 8-2 SU and 6-4 ATS record. The Cyclones fell short as 5.5-point underdogs in a 27-21 loss to Oklahoma after defeating the Sooners 37-30 back when the two teams first met in October. By taking a 24-7 lead into the half, Oklahoma forced Iowa State to leave its comfort zone and throw 40 passes, three of which were intercepted.

The Cyclones are at their best when they have the lead and can lean heavily on their defense and star running back Breece Hall. Hall finished the Big 12 championship with 79 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 1,436 rushing yards and 19 rushing majors. He should get the ball early and often against Oregon’s suspect rushing defense.

Betting Pick: Iowa State -4.5

The Ducks are a well-coached team that should bounce back with a stronger showing in 2021. But this season’s squad is ill-prepared to take on a Cyclones team that should be able to control the tempo with its defense and running game.
