Ducks Get Another Shot At Utah In Pac-12 Title Game

Two weeks after being whipped 38-7 in Utah, Oregon (10-2 SU, 5-7 ATS) seeks a measure of revenge facing the Utes (9-3, 5-7) with a Rose Bowl berth on the line. The total has gone OVER in seven of the last nine meetings.

Opening Odds Analysis

Utah was 3.5-point home chalk when it routed Oregon a couple of weeks ago, and oddsmakers opened the Utes as the favorite by a field goal for this neutral-field matchup. The early money came for the Ducks, moving the spread to 2.5 points at many betting sites by Sunday night.

Oregon News & Notes

After losing their top three receivers earlier this year to injuries and a transfer, the Ducks are seeing new threats emerge in the passing game. Devon Williams caught six balls for 110 yards and a touchdown in last week’s 38-29 win over Oregon State, while Kris Hutson added a career-high seven catches for 82 yards and his first career touchdown.

Williams has eclipsed the 100-yard plateau in each of his last two games, which happen to be the only times Oregon has had a 100-yard receiver this season. Williams and Hutson combined for 177 receiving yards and the Ducks’ lone touchdown catch when they met Utah last month.

Quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. should come into the Pac-12 championship game with plenty of confidence as well. Brown completed 23 of 28 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions against the Beavers, adding 83 yards and a score on the ground.

Utah News & Notes

It’s hard to imagine a team that is more motivated than the Utes, who have dedicated this season to the memory of former teammates Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe. Both of those players lost their lives in tragic shootings over the past year, and it has fueled Utah to overcome a 1-2 SU start to the season by winning eight of its final nine games.

“I know they are out there with us. They are the reason we have been as successful as we have been,” linebacker Devin Floyd told the Associated Press after the Utes completed the regular season with a 28-13 victory over Colorado. Floyd and the defense certainly deserve some credit as well, however, having allowed 13 points or less in three of their last four games.

That defense smothered the Buffaloes last week, holding Colorado to just nine completions and 84 passing yards while recording four sacks, and the Utes’ attack ran for 265 yards and made enough plays in the passing game to pull out the win. Utah’s struggling special teams were exposed once again, however, giving up a blocked field goal and a 100-yard kickoff return.

How Oregon Will Cover

A fast start would be key for the Ducks, forcing Utah to play from behind and rely less on its 15th-ranked running game. It would also allow Oregon to stay balanced on offense, committing to the run and opening up holes down the field for its emerging receiving threats.

How Utah Will Cover

If their recent blowout of the Ducks is any indication, expect the Utes to try to run Oregon over on the ground. Utah ran the ball 50 times for 208 yards in the previous meeting, controlling the ball for more than 35 minutes.
