    Penn State Coming Off Bye Week After Struggling To Beat Northwestern

    The Nittany Lions haven’t played since a mistake-filled 17-7 win over Northwestern on October 1, providing Penn State with plenty to work on during its bye week. Taking better care of the ball is a top priority after the Lions gave it away five times against the Wildcats.

    Fortunately, Penn State’s defense excels at taking the ball away as well. The Nittany Lions forced three turnovers that led to 14 of their 17 points against Northwestern as Penn State held a fourth straight opponent to 14 points or less.

    The Nittany Lions tend to play things a bit closer to the vest as a road underdog, going UNDER the total in six of their last seven in that role, and limited depth at receiver could lead to another low-scoring affair. Wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith left the game against Northwestern with a leg injury that required him to be outfitted with a walking boot.

    Wolverines Unimpressive In Win At Indiana But Should Be Better At Home

    Although Michigan is 6-0 SU for the second straight season, the jury is still out on just how good the Wolverines are. Voters in the AP Top 25 poll certainly don’t seem sold on Michigan, dropping the Wolverines from fourth to fifth in this week’s rankings following their unimpressive 31-10 victory at Indiana.

    The Wolverines found themselves in a 10-10 deadlock with the Hoosiers at halftime, although Michigan players may have had trouble focusing after seeing running game coordinator Mike Hart collapse on the sideline in the first quarter. Michigan eventually pulled away in the second half thanks to sophomore quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who posted the first 300-yard passing performance of his collegiate career, and a defense that allowed just 29 yards in the final 30 minutes.

    Michigan might look more like itself returning to Ann Arbor, where the Wolverines are 11-0 SU and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games. They’re also 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Big Ten contests and 6-2 ATS in their last eight vs the Nittany Lions.

    Penn State has had the bye week to prepare for this pivotal contest, and the Lions also have a significant advantage in big-game experience at quarterback with sixth-year senior Sean Clifford. Penn State’s ability to slow things down and play low-scoring games as a road underdog should help the team stay within striking distance.

    McCarthy has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football this season, leading the nation in completion percentage and ranking fifth in pass efficiency. He could be in for a big day against a Penn State defense that is 100th in the nation vs the pass despite having faced soft opposition so far this year.
