The city of Detroit was previously home to the Motor City Bowl and later the Little Sportsbook Bowl, and now is home to the Quick Lane Bowl, played every year on the day after Christmas at Ford Field.
The Quick Lane Bowl is one of two bowls that matches a Big Ten Conference member against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. However, when one of those conferences doesn’t produce a qualified contestant, a team from the Mid-American Conference is chosen.
The Big Ten’s Rutgers Scarlet Knights won the inaugural Quick Lane Bowl following the 2014 regular season, knocking off the North Carolina Tar Heels 40-21. Unfortunately, the first Quick Lane Bowl was over rather quickly, as Rutgers ran out to a 23-0 halftime lead. The Knights later pushed their advantage to 40-7 before allowing the Heels a couple of meaningless scores in the fourth quarter.
In 2015 the Central Michigan Chippewas, selected over an ACC entrant, met the Big Ten’s Minnesota Gophers but lost 21-13. Central Michigan led that game 14-13 early in the fourth quarter but gave up a long Minnesota touchdown drive and could not respond.
In 2016, in what was expected to be a low-scoring affair, the Boston College Eagles defeated the Maryland Terrapins 36-30. BC grabbed an early 16-0 lead and used a defensive score to go up 36-13 early in the third quarter. The Terps then battled back to within one score and got the ball back with a minute and a half to go, but came up empty on four plays.
The MVP award for the 2016 edition was given to the Boston College defensive line, which recorded eight sacks and 14 tackles for losses, recovered three fumbles, scored that defensive touchdown and sealed the victory with its late defensive stop.
This season’s edition of the Quick Lane Bowl will see the Minnesota Golden Gophers face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. For the latest odds, a free pick and handicapping information, visit our Quick Lane Bowl Game Center.
