Armed Forces Bowl Betting Preview: Aztecs Have Plenty to Prove Against Army

The San Diego State Aztecs were hoping to play a Power Five opponent in a higher-ranked bowl, however they’re going to have to settle for the Armed Forces Bowl against Army in Fort Worth, Texas.

MyBookie opened Army as 6-point underdogs with a total of 46.

  • San Diego State is 31-5 SU in its last 36 games.
  • Army is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games in December.
  • San Diego State is 6-2 ATS in its last eight games after consecutive wins.

The Black Knights are appearing in a bowl game in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in program history. Before head coach Jeff Monken arrived at West Point, the team had appeared in the postseason just once in the millennium and just twice since 1989. Army is well known for its triple-option offense to run the ball heavily. In fact, the Black Knights threw zero passes to beat Air Force in Week 10.

San Diego State is one of the best mid-major teams in the country and has quietly played some fantastic football at 10-2 SU on the season. The Aztecs went 6-2 SU vs the Mountain West in an impressive showing against divisional opponents. This is a school-record eighth straight bowl appearance for San Diego State, which is coming off wins in the 2015 Hawaii Bowl and 2016 Las Vegas Bowl.

Betting on the OVER in Army’s games has been a very profitable endeavor of late. In the Black Knights’ last seven contests, the OVER is 5-2.

A 37-25 result in favor of the Aztecs was the prediction by the OddsShark handicapping pick engine earlier this week.
