South Alabama has been a pit for bettors this season. The Jaguars have gone 3-8-1 ATS on the season as a whole and have not covered the spread since October 20. South Alabama will enter its Arizona Bowl matchup against Air Force as a big underdog.
The Arizona Bowl marks just the second time South Alabama has ever made it to a bowl game, with their first coming in the Camellia Bowl in 2014. The Jags offense hasn’t exactly been pleasant to watch this season, ranking in the bottom third in the nation in pretty much every statistical category. Running back Xavier Johnson has been playing his best football of the season lately, as the junior has tallied 353 rushing yards while averaging 8.3 yards per carry in the past three.
South Alabama’s defense has been completely one note this season, ranked eighth in the country against the pass and 97th against the run. Randy Allen has easily been the best individual player on the Jaguars defense, as the defensive end has tallied 64 tackles, 18.5 tackles for a loss and 11.5 sacks.
Air Force has not deviated from the traditional game plan, as the Falcons are fourth in the nation in rushing. Four different players have amassed 600-plus rushing yards with senior Jacobi Owens leading the way. The back to really keep an eye on is Timothy McVey, who is first on the team with 10 rushing touchdowns and averages 8.3 yards per carry.
Much like South Alabama, Air Force has been one-dimensional defensively, as its secondary has been good but the front seven has been completely unstable. Defensive back Weston Steelhammer was named to the All-Mountain West team for the third consecutive year, as the senior led the team in tackles and interceptions.
