Stanford News & Notes

For the first time in years, the Cardinal don’t have a clear star-in-waiting at the running back position. Austin Jones figures to be the team’s starting running back and he could share carries with Dorian Maddox and E.J. Smith this season.

Stanford returns quarterback Davis Mills and a talented wide receiving corps; if the running game can produce at its normal level, the Cardinal could have a very strong offense in 2020.

Stanford suffered through a rare down year in 2019, going 4-8 SU and 3-9 ATS with a 0-4 SU and ATS record to end the season. A handful of players leaving via transfer on both sides of the ball signals a rebuilding year for the Cardinal this season. But with David Shaw at the helm, it’s tough to see this team recording two straight disappointing seasons.

Oregon News & Notes

Oregon opened last season with a disappointing 27-21 loss to the Auburn Tigers. But from that point forward, the Ducks rolled to a 12-1 SU and 8-5 ATS record that included upset wins over the Utah Utes in the Pac-12 championship game and over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl.

After years of being known for their speed and gimmicks, the Ducks established themselves as a more physical team on both offense and defense last season in head coach Mario Cristobal’s second season in Autzen.

Now Cristobal will try to build on that success in a coronavirus-shortened campaign. The Ducks are loaded with talent despite losing Justin Herbert to the NFL draft. Tyler Shough looks the part of a capable replacement, and if he is up to the task, an undefeated season isn’t out of the question for Oregon.

Betting Pick: Stanford +10.5

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see Oregon pick up a blowout win in this one. But the more likely scenario would be a competitive game that eventually sees Oregon pull away, leaving Stanford a good chance to cover the spread as a double-digit underdog.
