Texas A&M News & Notes

Texas A&M bounced back from an underwhelming 10-7 win over the Colorado Buffaloes with a more complete effort in a 34-0 win over the New Mexico Lobos last Saturday.

Zach Calzada went 19-for-33 with 275 passing yards, three touchdown passes and one interception and Isaiah Spiller rushed for 117 yards and a score on 15 carries. The Aggies defense held the Lobos to only 122 total yards.

The defense ranks ninth in the nation in total yards allowed per game (239.3) and is tops in scoring defense, giving up only 5.7 points per game. While the Aggies haven’t really faced any major competition yet, this defense was expected to be excellent and has passed the eye test so far. Quarterback and offensive line play will be what determines whether this Aggies team is a good one or a great one in 2021.

Arkansas News & Notes

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman led the Razorbacks to a 3-7 record last season after the team recorded back-to-back 2-10 seasons in 2019 and 2018. The Razorbacks have already matched last season’s win total with a 3-0 SU and ATS start, avoiding a letdown after their 40-21 upset win over the Texas Longhorns with a 45-10 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles last Saturday.

KJ Jefferson had a breakout performance against the Eagles with 366 passing yards and three touchdowns in the win. Jefferson has been doing more with his legs this season than his arm, helping lead a Razorbacks rushing attack that ranks eighth in the nation with 282.3 rushing yards per game.

While Texas A&M has the best passing defense in the country, allowing only 77.3 passing yards per outing, its rush defense has been less impressive with 162 rushing yards allowed per game.

Staff Betting Pick: Arkansas +5.5

The last three games in this series have been decided by 11 points, four points and seven points. Arkansas looks far better on defense this season than it has in recent years and isn’t facing Kellen Mond at quarterback this time around. All signs point to a competitive game in Arlington.
