Frost Favored To Be Florida’s Next Head Coach

After three consecutive losses that saw the offense absolutely bottom out, the Florida Gators and Jim McElwain have mutually decided to part ways. The two parties came to this agreement following a 42-7 drubbing at the hands of Georgia.

Though injuries and off-the-field issues have plagued Florida all season long, there is no doubt that coaching in Gainesville will be a highly sought-after job. The potential candidates are nearly endless, from established veterans to upstarts.

The top odds belong to Scott Frost (+150) from UCF. Frost has a proven track record of working with quarterbacks from his time with the Oregon Ducks – he was the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for Marcus Mariota – and has made UCF QB McKenzie Milton one of the most efficient in the nation.

Frost checks all the boxes you are looking for but has only been a head coach once in his career and that has yet to last through two full seasons. Florida might be looking more toward an established name but Frost is going to get himself a top-flight coaching gig sooner rather than later.

If Florida chooses to go after a bigger name, keep an eye on Dan Mullen (+350). The current Mississippi State coach formerly worked on the Florida staff from 2005 to 2008 – winning two national championships in that span. Plus, Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin worked with Mullen at Mississippi State for six years before jumping ship to Florida.

In addition, there is little left for Mullen to achieve with the Bulldogs. Despite being just 45, Mullen might already be the most accomplished coach in the program’s history and it is seemingly just a matter of time before he gets his first gig at a major program.

I personally think a name to keep an eye on is Matt Campbell (+800), who is currently the head coach of Iowa State. Campbell is still only 37 but has already been a head coach at the collegiate level since 2011. The coach has also worked marvels in Ames, as he has helped turn a perennial doormat into one of the better teams in the Big 12. Campbell is not as sexy a candidate as Mullen or Frost but could very well end up being one of the better collegiate coaches around in a few seasons.
