  • The battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe has added significance this year as the Sportsbook of Saturday’s clash between Minnesota and Wisconsin will go to the Big Ten championship game. Minnesota shook off its first loss of the season to hammer Northwestern last week, but Wisconsin has won 14 of the last 15 meetings.

    Sportsbook Odds Analysis

    Sportsbooks continue to be skeptical of the 10-1 Golden Gophers, Sportsbook them as underdogs for the third time in the last four weeks. Early money has agreed with that sentiment, moving the Badgers up to 3-point road chalk as of Sunday night.

    Wisconsin News & Notes

    Wisconsin has won several of its games this year in spite of its offense, not because of it. But the Badgers should come into Minnesota with tons of confidence offensively after posting their highest yardage total in five years last week against Purdue. Wisconsin gained 603 total yards in a 45-24 win over the Boilermakers, which was also the Badgers’ second-highest scoring performance since early September.

    It’s no secret that the Badgers attack runs through Jonathan Taylor, whose 222 rushing yards last week gave him the FBS record for most career rushing yards by a player still in his junior year. But Wisconsin has added some new wrinkles to its attack over the past few weeks that Minnesota will have to prepare for.

    Aron Cruickshank scored Wiscy’s first touchdown on a direct snap out of the wildcat formation, and the Badgers have used real and fake jet sweeps on a regular basis as well. Quarterback Jack Coan has looked better as well, completing 15 of 19 passes last week for 203 yards and a pair of majors.

    Minnesota News & Notes

    The Golden Gophers had two big causes for concern going into last week’s game at Northwestern: how would they respond to their first loss of the season, and how would quarterback Tanner Morgan play after spending the week in concussion protocol.

    As it turned out, Minnesota had nothing to worry about. The Gophers scored on each of their first three possessions in a 38-22 romp over the Wildcats, and Morgan finished with four touchdown passes to set a school record with 26 on the campaign.

    Minnesota has now gone OVER in four of its last five games, and the Gophers have scored at least 30 points in nine of their last 10. They may need to make it 10 times out of 11 against Wisconsin, considering that 15 of the last 19 meetings have sailed OVER the total. In fact, Minny’s 37-15 win last year at Wisconsin marked just the second time in the last 10 meetings the Badgers didn’t put up 30-plus points.
