NFL Draft: Which QB Is The First Selected?

I would hate to be a team in need of a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft. Not to say there isn’t talent in the group, but teams are going to be reaching in the top five for players who likely shouldn’t be taken anywhere before the middle of the first round. When you select in the top five, I’m an advocate for taking the best player available, but that’s just not how football works.

The quarterback is the most important position in sports and there is a massive premium on the position. So, which of this year’s new crop of signal-callers is most likely to go first?

To know this, we need to determine which teams selecting high need a quarterback. The Cleveland Browns select first overall and need a QB, but they have two first-round picks and will likely just take Myles Garrett at the top, since pass rush is also a team need, and address quarterbacks later. Originally, many people thought the San Francisco 49ers would be in the conversation for a QB at No. 2. However, as time has gone on, there are reports that quarterbacks are going to slide further than usual this season.

Mitch Trubisky is listed as the -333 favorite to be the first signal-caller off the board. The UNC product has a strong arm and is a good athlete. Trubisky does come with plenty of question marks as he started just one season for the Tar Heels but he has the physical tools and the decision-making to at least be a solid QB for years to come.

The other signal-caller who is getting plenty of buzz right now is Patrick Mahomes. The Texas Tech quarterback has the strongest arm in the draft class and can easily zip the ball into tight frames. He did play in an Air Raid system in college and has a little too much gunslinger in him, but those are things a good coaching staff can easily work on.
