49ers vs Raiders Odds & Picks Preseason Week 3: Niners over Raiders

The San Francisco 49ers are 5.5-point favorites vs. the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3 of the preseason after beating the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in exhibition action on Sunday. The Raiders are 0-2 in preseason action and have allowed 51 combined points to the Cowboys and Vikings so far. The total in this game is set at 35 points and it’s worth noting that betting preseason unders have been an extremely successful strategy so far.

With this being the final tune-up before the regular season, I expect to see a lot of backups in this one (especially on the Las Vegas side) and I’m trusting the depth of the 49ers in this spot.

49ers vs Raiders Pick – Preseason Week 3

The 49ers opened as a +3.5 point underdogs and, thanks to a huge line move, they’re now laying 5.5 points. Following the steam hasn’t been a successful strategy so far this preseason and I think the time to bet the 49ers point spread. However, I’m still happy to bet the 49ers to win the game outright in a contest where both coaches should be mainly concerned with leaving the game healthy.

Joshua Dobbs is built for this. The 49ers' backup QB has proven he’s not capable of being a quality starter for a 17-game season, but the preseason is where Joshua Dobbs’ skillset shines. Dobbs ability to improvise when plays break down, which happens often behind porous offensive lines in the preseason, makes him dangerous in exhibition games. We saw this in the 49ers' Week 2 preseason game game when he rushed for 25 yards and a TD with 133 yards passing and no sacks. Dobbs is in a legitimate battle for the No. 2 QB job with Brandon Allen who has also played well, so the 49ers’ backup QBs are experienced and will be playing with extra motivation. The Raiders on the other hand are expected to feature Nathan Peterman, who was signed this week, and undrafted free agent rookie Carter Bradley.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed starting QB Brock Purdy will see some snaps in the first half, while Raiders coach Antonio Pierce is taking a more conservative approach. The 49ers should be able to jump out to an early lead playing against backups on the Raiders defense.

Will Brock Purdy Start vs The Raiders

Yes, Brock Purdy will start in the 49ers’ final preseason game vs. the Raiders according to head coach Kyle Shanahan who confirmed the news earlier this week. Purdy took snaps in the 49ers' second preseason game and didn’t look very good playing with backups, but Shanahan said the plans was to get Purdy, “One long drive.” We’re not certain exactly how long Purdy will play in this one, but I think Purdy will get pulled as soon as he leads a successful drive in this game and since he’s expected to be playing vs. Raiders backups, that could happen on the opening drive.

  • The 49ers have scored 7 points or less in three out of their last eight preseason games.
  • The total point scored in each of the last six Raiders preseason games have been 39+ points.
