Andrew Luck Indianapolis Colts Retirement

Andrew Luck Odds: Will He Return to the NFL or Opt for the XFL?

Andrew Luck’s decision to walk away from football and retire at the age of 29 sent shock waves throughout the sports world, and the Indianapolis Colts will be forced to go forward without their franchise quarterback with less than two weeks before the 2019 NFL season gets underway.

Luck was seen on the sidelines of the Colts’ preseason contest Saturday night when ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news and the QB proceeded to get booed by the Indianapolis faithful. After the game, Luck confirmed the news in a press conference, citing a mounting injury history taking a toll on his psyche.

”I felt stuck and the only way out of it is to no longer play football,” he said. “It’s taken my joy away from the game.” The first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft leaves the only franchise he’s ever known as a four-time Pro Bowler along with 171 career passing touchdowns and 23,671 passing yards.

Would Luck Actually Join the XFL?

But there’s one tidbit to this story that’s significantly interesting: Luck’s father, Oliver Luck, is the CEO and commissioner of Vince McMahon’s XFL that is getting set to reboot in 2020.

Online sportsbook Sportsbook has released odds on what Andrew’s future holds, with the odds on him playing in the NFL in the next two years at +500, the chances of him joining the XFL at +1500 and an option for “neither” at -4000.

Given Luck’s extensive injury history and the fact that he’s already earned close to $100 million in his seven-year career, it wouldn’t be a shock to see No. 12 never play professionally again. But stranger things have happened in pro sports, and if he gets the itch to compete again, the Colts would surely welcome the signal-caller back with open arms down the road.

Colts Could Be in Major Trouble Without Luck

Luck had three years remaining on the six-year extension he signed in 2016 and is giving up $58 million by retiring. With former backup-turned-starter Jacoby Brissett in tow, oddsmakers aren’t expecting much from the Luck-less Colts, as Sportsbook dropped Indy’s Super Bowl price from +1600 to +5000 after the news broke.
