Steelers Have Won 13 Of Their Last 14 Prime-Time Games

A pair of teams that are rounding into form at the halfway point of the season are set to collide in Pennsylvania when Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers play host to Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers in the Week 10 edition of Thursday Night Football. Sportsbooks opened the Steelers as 4-point home favorites with a total of 51.5.

SHARK BITES
  • The Panthers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as road underdogs.
  • The total has gone OVER in seven of the Steelers’ last 10 games (avg. combined score: 55.4).
  • The Panthers are 0-6 ATS in their last six games vs the Steelers.

Steelers have been cover machines against the Panthers

This is only the seventh all-time meeting between the Panthers and Steelers – Carolina won the first game way back in 1996 before the Steelers rattled off five victories in a row in the series. Pittsburgh last met Carolina in 2014, when the Steelers came away with a 37-19 decision. They have covered the spread in every matchup with the Panthers.

Carolina has done well to keep up with the red-hot New Orleans Saints in the NFC South and now sit only a game behind Drew Brees and company in the division. The Panthers have yet to lose at home this season, improving to 5-0 in Charlotte thanks to a 42-28 win over Tampa Bay. Carolina notched a franchise-record 35 points in the first half, as Cam Newton continued his personal-best run of seven straight contests with two touchdown scores.

When the Panthers find themselves as road underdogs, they tend to come through for bettors. In its past 10 games as a road dog, Carolina is a solid 7-3 ATS. The Panthers are 5-20-1 SU in their last 26 away from home against teams with winning records, though.

Steelers love the bright lights of prime time

Leaders of the AFC North, the Steelers notched their fourth straight win in a 23-16 decision over the archrival Baltimore Ravens. James Conner has helped Steelers fans forget all about the Le’Veon Bell drama, as the running back recorded his fourth straight 100-yard game with 107 rushing yards on 24 carries while adding seven catches for 56 yards and a score through the air.

Considered a weakness throughout September, Pittsburgh’s defense has bounced back in a big way of late. The unit hasn’t allowed more than 21 points in a game in the winning streak after allowing an average of 29 through the team’s first four contests.

The Steelers have become one of the best straight-up bets when playing under the bright lights of prime time, as Pittsburgh is a fantastic 13-1 SU in its past 14 prime-time tilts.

My pick: take the Panthers as road dogs

While the Steelers have a track record of producing at night with the eyes of the nation squared upon them, I think the Panthers are simply too good to be getting this many points. Carolina is in a serious groove right now, and Newton is playing his best football in years with a plethora of offensive weapons around him. The Steelers are also far from a lock to cover the spread when playing at Heinz Field, as Pittsburgh is 2-7 ATS in its previous nine home games.
