Panthers Heading In A New Direction ... Again

Coming off their bye, this week didn’t start out well for the Carolina Panthers. Teammates had to say goodbye to quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was placed on waivers Monday. But it’s business as usual, especially for Sam Darnold, who will be under center, likely for the remainder of the season. Two weeks ago, he started his first game in 10 months, against the Denver Broncos, leading the Panthers to a 23-10 win. Darnold certainly wasn’t spectacular, but he did enough to ensure the victory.

Carolina has struggled away from home this season with an 0-5 record while being outscored 135-84. The Panthers average just over 291 total yards per game, third worst in the NFL behind only the Rams and the Texans. At 4-8, they are somehow still fighting for a playoff spot in the very weak NFC South, currently led by Tom Brady and the Bucs with a pedestrian 6-6 record.

Smith Seizing The Moment For The Seahawks

It’s not something Jets fans could have ever imagined: Geno Smith in the conversation for MVP. Sure, the Seahawks quarterback is a long shot at +5000, but his odds seem to drop each week. Last Sunday, Smith threw for a career-high 367 yards and three touchdowns as Seattle beat the Rams 27-23. Smith is sixth in the league in passing yards with 3,169, which is also a career high.

Seattle ranks fifth in scoring in the NFL and has averaged nearly 29 points in its last six contests. That offense has the Seahawks in the thick of things in the playoff race. They currently hold the final wild-card spot in the NFC and sit just one game back of the 49ers for top spot in the NFC West.

Panthers: Keys To Victory

Establish the run game. The Panthers are at their best when they can run the ball effectively. And who needs Christian McCaffrey anyway? D’Onta Foreman rushed for 113 yards in their last game and has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in four of his last six games. They should be able to take advantage of Seattle’s poor rush defense, which allows 155 yards per game. A strong performance by Foreman would also take some pressure off Darnold.

Seahawks: Keys To Victory

Create turnovers. It’s something the Seahawks have done all season long, with only the Eagles (23) having more takeaways than Seattle (21). Cornerback Tariq Woolen, tied for the league lead with six interceptions, is having a Pro Bowl-type season. The Seahawks haven’t lost the turnover battle since Week 2 and if they continue that trend, they may be the smart choice when making your Panthers vs Seahawks pick.
