The Bengals Defense Is Better Than You Thought

Joe Burrow & Bengals road underdogs in Week 7 against AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens.

The Cincinnati Bengals (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) were outscored 65-6 in a pair of one-sided losses last year to the Baltimore Ravens (5-1, 3-3). Cincinnati has lost five straight to its AFC North rival but this year has a healthy Joe Burrow and has already matched its 2020 win total. A win against the Ravens on Sunday would put the Bengals in a tie with Baltimore atop the division.

Opening Odds Analysis

Baltimore opened at -7 on the early look-ahead line, but after the Bengals were done disposing of the Detroit Lions last week, the number dropped to -6.5. Both teams have winning records this year but are just 3-3 ATS. The total opened at 48 and that too has dropped, with 47 the most popular number and several sportsbooks also posting 47.5.

Cincinnati News & Notes

The Bengals rank inside the top 10 defensively in rushing yards allowed per game, total points allowed and point differential, and have yet to allow more than 25 points in a game this season.

Joe Burrow, returning from a torn ACL last season, is 14th in Adjusted QB Ranking. He has thrown for 300-plus yards in a game just once this year and has also been intercepted seven times in his last five starts.

Last week against the Lions, rookie receiver Ja’Marr Chase had four receptions for 97 yards. Chase has over 500 yards receiving and is ranked inside the top 15 for receivers on most DFS sites this week.

Baltimore News & Notes

Before playing the Los Angeles Chargers last Sunday, Lamar Jackson had thrown for 442, 316 and 287 yards in his previous three games. Against the Chargers, Jackson threw for only 167 yards, but the Ravens still scored 34 points.

Two weeks ago, the Baltimore offense’s streak of 43 straight 100-yard rushing games was snapped. The Ravens started a new streak Sunday, rumbling over the Bolts for 187 yards on the ground.

Baltimore also held L.A. quarterback Justin Herbert under 16 points for only the second time in his 22 games in the NFL. The secondary limited Herbert to under 200 yards passing on 39 attempts and came away with one interception.

How Cincinnati Will Cover

If the Bengals defense can hold the Ravens under 22 points in regulation, as it has against its last six opponents, Cincinnati will be in a great spot to cover. Joe Burrow has been good, with flashes of greatness so far. He doesn’t have to be great for the Bengals to cover, but he can’t turn the ball over.

How Baltimore Will Cover

Any time Lamar Jackson starts a football game, great things can happen. Baltimore fans must be encouraged by the team’s defensive performance last week against the Chargers. Jackson plus a very good defense is a great recipe for a cover.
