Ezekiel Elliott Reportedly Suspended Six Games by the NFL

The Dallas Cowboys are seen as a team on the rise, but the franchise’s playoff aspirations were dealt a massive blow on Friday when starting running back Ezekiel Elliott was reportedly suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the 2017 campaign.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who was the first to report the news, stated Elliott has three days to file an appeal. The decision comes in the wake of a charge stemming from the 22-year-old’s ex-girlfriend who accused him of domestic violence in 2016. While prosecutors in Columbus, Ohio decided not to press charges, the league chose to suspend him anyway after undertaking a lengthy investigation.

If upheld, the move will have a huge impact on not only the Cowboys but the entire NFL. Elliott burst onto the scene a year ago, rushing for 1,631 yards while reaching the end zone 16 times as an integral part of Dallas’ new-found dynamic offense. The OSU alum finished the year as the NFL’s top rusher, which led to his selection as a first-time All-Pro and a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Both Cowboys fans and bettors alike will surely be upset with this development. Prior to the suspension, the Boys had a +1200 shot of winning the Super Bowl at Bovada – the fourth-best odds in the league – as well as a +550 price to win the NFC. “America’s Team” was +150 to garner the NFC East banner, ahead of the New York Giants (+200), Philadelphia Eagles (+333) and the Washington Redskins (+550).

As of this writing, the Cowboys were 4.5-point home favorites in their season-opening game against the Giants on September 10. We’ll add more to this story as it develops.
